I am a hard worker on the court and in school. I always give 100% in everything I am doing. I am a very versatile player, having to occasionally play every position for my team. I have a high basketball IQ, and I am very coachable. Why? I began running with my mom when I was 4 years old and had an 8’28” mile when I was 6. I have run cross country to maintain endurance and speed, which is needed to outrun and outplay defensively and offensively the entirety of the game. I have been loving the game since I could walk, starting AAU early in elementary, which has helped build experience and versatility. Given what good shape I am in, I was surprised to learn I was nearly dying while in the emergency room. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes a week before my tenth birthday. In the hospital multiple days, my mom crying, the pain of IVs, the shock of toxicity in my blood, I could have stopped there and threw in the towel. But I didn’t. I researched other athletes with Type 1 diabetes and learned their strategies of maintaining high performance with this disorder. I was invited to former NBA player Chris Dudley’s basketball camp and was inspired by his compassion, integrity, and approaches to playing strong. Have there been setbacks? Sure, when my blood becomes toxic I have to follow medical plans, which can require time away from class, but no excuses. I am proud of the fact that although I have faced adversity and understand the fragility of life, I have been strong and continue to be a 4-point honor roll student, taking advanced math and honors English classes. I also strive to serve others, walking miles in Scouts to deliver and collect food bags for local food banks. I can reflect on my weaknesses and turn them to strengths by researching plays, drills, and workouts to improve my game. I understand each day is a gift and a challenge. Nothing given, all earned. I understand to score a goal you must take a shot. This is my shot.
