Earning the chance to compete in the 2015 Minnesota State Diving Tournament as a freshman was not only unexpected, overwhelming, and petrifying, but it helped me understand what to expect at state in the years to come. It was terrifying, to say the least. It had only been my second year diving ever, so my apprehension was justified rather fairly. I didn't do very well that year, that was just circumstance. I did much better the next year; getting barely edged out of the top 16 cutoff by a measly two points.
The sport of diving in my hometown of Duluth, MN was nonexistent for more than 35 years until I joined the high school swim/dive team in the fall of 2013. This was my 8th grade year, I was 5' 2", weighed almost 100 pounds, and let me be frank, I had absolutely no training in any aspect of diving beforehand. We didn't even have a coach, until my dad, who dove in high school, stepped in, and has been there ever since.
In total, I've had four seasons of 1m springboard diving. I have gone to state in my second, third, and fourth year. In my third and fourth year, I won True Team Sections along with regular sections, been voted Section 7AA Diver of the Year and have been nominated for All-American. For the past two years now, in the summer, I've done a week-long diving camp at the University of Minnesota. It has undoubtedly helped me become a stronger diver and has briefly acquainted me to platform and three-meter diving. As of the spring of 2017, I joined the Minnesota Diving Academy at the University of Minnesota, so I'm learning the ropes of 3m and platform there.
I hope to dive at the collegiate level in the fall of 2018. My educational aspirations are somewhat unclear at this point; it's simply too early to tell. I'm just a junior, but if I had to choose right now, I really enjoy my college-level Psychology class, so I might consider a major in that field. I also had a really good Honors English teacher last year, so I might consider an educational/instructional major.
