Personal Statement
My name is Matt Surface and this year I will be a senior at Saint James Academy. I have been golfing for around 9 years now and have been involved in competitive golf all my life. My freshman year I had my first varsity start, sophomore year I played in 1 varsity event, and junior year I played in a varsity event. This year I will be full time varsity.
This summer of 2016 has been the most intense summer of my life. Everyday I get to the course at 8 am and am there for anywhere from 6-8 hours. My wedges are nearly worn down from dialing them in on the pitching range. I come home sore and tired everyday from beating out as many as 250 range balls and getting in as many holes as possible, usually 18-27. As a younger kid I went off of the fact thatI was genetically gifted ad talented. All the swing coaches I went to said I have the perfect golf body and my family has golf in they're blood. So this lead me to assume I would be great and recently I have realized, it's gonna take some hard work to be as great as I want to be. I have become much more of a consitent player as I am now averaging mid 70's to low 80's on the course. Since my freshman year I have knocked my handicap down from a 27 to a 4.7 and it is still steadily dropping.
I can honestly say I am proud of how far I've come, but I am no where near where I want to be, and I'm looking for a college team that will help me reach my goals while I help them win more golf tournaments. I am a good candidate for any collegiate golf team because I know that I will be the hardest worker on the team. I'm not afraid to hit balls on the range until I rip through my glove, wake up at 6 am for practice or a lesson and work on short game until I'm kicked off of the course.
What makes me different from other recruits is my athletic abilities, and my drive to be an all around great student. I strive to be the most superior athlete on the course in strength, mobility, and everything else. I was a member of Saint James football team for a year because I knew it would help advance my athletic abilities and it did. I am around 6 ft tall and 170 lbs. Some of my strength milestones are a 225 lb bench, 325 lb squat, and 210 lb hang clean. I also strive to be the best student and teammate I can be. This means inviting my friends to study sessions before a test instead of going out, showing up to school early as possible to ask teachers for help, and placing myself in the highest level courses possible in order to challenge myself. To be the best teammate, I will always motivate others on my team to be the best they can be, and do whatever they need me to do to help them become that. I believe this is another quality that sets me apart from other recruits. I would like to thank you for taking the time to look at my page and read about me and I hope you will consider contacting me! Thank you coaches!
