Evan Spence Summe...Personal Statement
I will be a good fit on a college golf team primarily because of my aspiration to work to succeed. I believe that success in tournament golf is not achieved on the days of the tournaments, but rather in the countless hours of work and practice in the weeks and months prior to the tournament. I have, do, and will continue to put in that work.
Another reason that I will be a good fit on a golf team is I am "low maintenance". I make high grades at a highly difficult prep school with a weighted GPA of 4.04 on a 4.3 scale. I have taken 7 honors classes in my freshman and sophomore year, and in my junior year, I am currently taking 2 AP classes. I have a tight circle of good quality friends who help push me to achieve better things in academics and on the golf course and I always try to associate with people who aren't going to drag me to low places where I don't want or need to be.
I have learned to sharpen my time management skills over the past couple of years as well. Balancing golf at a highly competitive level with honors and AP classes is difficult in itself, however, I am also a member of the McCallie Guitar Quartet. The Quartet is comprised of the four best classical guitarists in the school. To date we have performed on NPR live national radio shows and are currently in the process of auditioning for a competition with the nationally acclaimed organization, Guitar Foundation of America. The Quartet demands time consuming practice to refine the art and my ability to achieve success in the Quartet and on the golf course as well demonstrates my ability to handle a heavy workload successfully.
Arguably my biggest asset is my competitiveness. I feel like my desire to do well pushes me to go the extra few steps each day in practice and preparation and that will set me apart in golf at the collegiate level. I will also bring this level of competitiveness and determination to my team. As a junior in high school, I play in the #1 spot, and have been elected as captain of the varsity team among five senior candidates. I feel like my teammates have recognized my aspiration to succeed and for that reason elected me as their captain. Not only do I push myself to do great, but I feel like I have the ability to push my teammates to do the same.
College golf has been my dream for a long time now and I firmly believe I have the assets to not only get there, but to succeed at the collegiate level as well.

- High School match played at Bear Trace @ Tims Ford. The course has a 1 over par rating and I shot a 4 under par 67. I was the low man for the match.

- High School Tournament in which I placed 6th out of 57 by shooting an even par 72.

- The par 72 Cobblestone Creek had a 74 rating and for three days I shot 75-72-73 to finish solo 4th. Overall, I played solid golf and it feels really good to finish top 5 in an AJGA and become fully exempt for all open AJGAs in the future.

- Weather shortened this event to a 1 day shootout. This was the first high school tournament of the season for me. There were 84 players in the tournament including state champions and multiple AJGA winners. I tied for 1st place with one of the best juniors in the country and Alabama commit, Davis Shore. We both shot 2 under par 68 in the windy conditions at a highly difficult Lookout Mountain golf club where the average score out of 84 players was just below 83.0. The next best score after Davis Shore and I was one over par 71.

- Shot even par 72. Course played from around 6,900 yards with 73.1 rating. Finished in top 15 out of 80 plus players but unfortunately did not qualify for the tournament. Missed by 1 shot.

- I shot even par 72 on the 6,900 yard RTJ Hampton Cove course with a 73.1 rating. I finished in the top 10 out of 75 players and earned my way into the AJGA Huntsville Junior

- 54 hole invitational tournament for players who had won or placed top 3 in a HJGT event this season played from 6,800-6,900 yards at a 73.1 rating. I shot 76-75-77 for a 9th place finish out of close to 50 players.

- Amidst multiple rain delays on one of the toughest golf courses I have played in competition to date, I shot 79 the first round and 75 the second round to finish in second place. We played the golf course from about 7,000 yards with a rating of 74.

- I got my first win of the summer in my second event. I shot 76-74 and won the tournament by 4 shots.

- To kick off my summer tournament schedule, I finished 11th out of 47 players. I struggled to a 77 the first day. The second day, I started my round by bogeying the first hole, double bogeying the second hole, and then double bogeying the third hole. I was five over par through the first three holes but I did not let that keep me down as I made five birdies and one eagle in the remaining fifteen holes to finish with a 74. I felt like this was a good way for me to kick off the summer because I was able to demonstrate the fight and never give up attitude I have in my game.

- We played the course from around 6800 yards with a rating of 74.9. I shot 74 the first day. The second day, temperatures were in the upper thirties to low forties with wind and rain all day. These were the toughest conditions I have played in to date. I scrapped an 82 out of it and tied for 6th place.

- We played the course from 6,737 yards with a rating of 73.5. With the wind gusting at 25-30 mph both days and temps dropping into the mid-low forties, I shot 78 both rounds and finished 3rd.

- I had some unfortunate breaks on the first day which led to an 80 but was able to bounce back with the low round of the day on day two with a 73 to vault me into 5th place.

- We played the par 72 course from the back tees at 6,742 yards with a rating of 73. I shot 74 the first round and 73 the second round to finish in fourth place out of twenty-three.

- This was a two-day tournament, 18 holes being held on day one and an 18 hole final match being held on day two. The field was determined by Chattanooga Junior tour's points list leaders after the five tournament summer season which l led. I shot 1 under 71 in the first round to advance to the final match. In the final I won 3 and 2 and was even par through the 16 holes. We played the difficult course from around 6600 yards. Yes. I took Honors English Freshman and Sophomore year. I took Honors Geometry Freshman year and Honors Algebra II and Trigonometry Sophomore year. I took Honors Chemistry Sophomore Year. I took Honors Spanish 2 Freshman Year and Honors Spanish 3 Sophomore Year. I am currently in Accelerated Pre-Calculus in my Junior year.Are you in AP/IB classes?
