I fell in love with rowing right after COVID, when I was searching for a way to move my body again, meet new people, and be outside as much as possible, after two years of being inside. Rowing was that perfect way. From the very first time I rowed, I adored it. Every mistake was an opportunity, I could feel the boat accelerate as I fixed my form and improved my stroke, going faster every time. From there, I dove further into my school’s rowing club, trying to get an early opportunity to race. I stayed at practice late and arrived early, and built a training regimen for the gym. This hard work paid off when I was given the opportunity to join the race team.
Once I joined the team, it became clear that my size enabled me, even as a relatively new rower, to make a positive contribution to the team. This year, my first full year of rowing, our team was our category’s winner at the Head of the Weir and at Icebreaker, and placed second at the VCB Youth Row. Then, right after we finished the fall race season and had begun training for the CRASH-B tournament in March, I fell and broke my shoulder, leaving me unable to row until the very end of Feburary. Four months of physical therapy later, I am entirely healed, have resumed training, and am driving hard to prepare for the last two races of the season and get to CRASH-B next year.
In the meanwhile, I am taking my role as senior team member and next year’s co-captain of the Stuyvesant rowing team very seriously. I am leveraging the teaching experience I gained teaching kids test prep and computer science to teach the newer members of our team everything they need to know to not only begin rowing but also continue improving their pace and stroke once on the water. I’m looking for a college rowing program that will be a good fit for me athletically as well as academically. I believe I not only have the strength, skills, and drive to continuously improve to compete at the college level, but also have the work-ethic and team-building experience to make an impact on your program. I hope you will consider me.
