Personal Statement

Throughout my life, soccer has more than just a sport to me; it has helped shape me into the person I am today. I started playing soccer at age 6. My father was a goalkeeper for his entire career and actually encouraged me to play other positions. However, no matter what other positions I tried, I was drawn to the box. Soccer taught me from early on to be a team player. I learned that giving up a goal did not mean I could give up on the game. This mindset has spilled over into everyday life as well. Hard work and perseverance is the way I lead my life on the field and in the classroom. Playing soccer has taught me about leadership, teamwork, and most importantly, perseverance.

My parents have always emphasized that being a leader and not a follower is what sets a person apart from the crowd. I was chosen captain of my club team over the years as well as captain of my Freshman team, although I was only on Freshman for 4 games before I was brought up to start JV. As a sophomore, I won the starting varsity keeper position in the first week of the season over two returning upperclassmen. What sets me apart from other college recruits is not only my athletic ability but my overall attitude toward the game and my team. I am able to make the challenging saves as well as the routine ones and consistently demonstrate leadership skills by directing my defense throughout the game. If a goal is scored, I take the hit and move on. I come out stronger and with even more conviction to win. There is no room for insecurity or self-depreciation. Giving up is never an option. My team depends on me to direct and protect. I won't let them down. What makes me a good candidate for a collegiate level soccer team is my belief in balance. School work is always a priority and I am proud to say that I've achieved honor roll every marking since starting high school. I continue to push myself academically by taking honor level courses.

My goal is to earn a starting position at a Division 1 University. I know nothing comes without hard work and dedication which is why I’ve never given less than 110% on the field or in the classroom. Although I am not yet certain of my career path, my intent is to find a school that is both a strong academic and athletic fit for me. My ultimate goal is to play soccer at the professional level.
