Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Coleton Tanner.  After playing several different sports growing up, I deiced to join my neighborhood swim team at the age of 11 where I instantly developed a passion for the pool. After a year I decided to join Foothills Swim Team (FST), which was immediately a much more competitive training environment. As I quickly progressed through the team's training groups, I grew tremendously in a short amount of time and quickly advanced past my peers who had started at the same level. Once I came close to starting my first year of high school, I decided to fully commit to swimming. I began working harder than ever both inside and outside the pool as I conditioned myself and continued to refine my technique through working with my coaches. As the only freshman to make my high school state team, I earned a spot on the 200 Freestyle Relay with three seniors where we won 2nd team All-Conference in finals. As I became a sophomore, I eventually reached the highest group on my club team where I trained with national and Olympic-trials level swimmers and pushed myself past my body's limits.

I believe one of my biggest strengths is my ability to grow and quickly improve. Although I've only been swimming since I was 11, I believe discipline, diligence, and receptiveness to coaching has allowed me to progress within the sport quicker than most athletes who've started at my age. In only a couple years, I've progressed from just barely making state to now qualifying for sectionals in the 200 breaststroke this past summer. I hope to apply this same work-ethic to my college athletic career, and I believe that consistency, persistent work and trusting in the process will allow me to reach my full potential as an athlete as well as a person, and allow me to grow beyond what I've though possible. I'm eager to explore a variety of programs for the future get in touch with college coaches.
