Growing up I always saw myself as the underdog. I was smaller than all the other kids and being born right on the cutoff date for school, I was also younger than everyone in my grade. Every time I lost at something I began to use it as an excuse. I began to settle for less because of this underdog mentality. If it wasn’t for swimming I believe I would still be stuck in that poor way of thinking.
Swimming was the first place where I saw work directly translate to success. You train harder, You do better. It was as simple as that. Through swimming, I quickly learned to drop any excuses and put the work in. I soon applied that mentality not only to swimming but all aspects of my life.
For any college I attend, I guarantee that I will put my best effort in the pool and classroom. My main goal is to continue improving my work ethic and translating into improving my times and maintaining good grades. I believe that the biggest thing I missed out on in high school was going to a school without a swim team. I believe that I missed out on relationships and experience in the weight room but I can’t wait to experience those things in college!
Throughout my swim career, I have had consistent time drops every season and I believe I have the work ethic and potential to continue this trend to my swim career in college. In school, I have always been among the top students, especially in subjects involving math and sciences. In college, I plan to combine my natural talent and hard work to succeed in my classes, and eventually work in the medical field. Because of Covid-19, I have had to overcome hour long practices to improve. As I come closer to graduating, I hope that COVID-19 ends so I can reach my full potential as a swimmer. In practice, I am proud to say that besides a strong work ethic and determination, I also carry a strong sense of integrity. Whether it’s the first 300 of a slow Monday morning practice or a long set when the head coach is absent, I promise you that I will give you my best effort each and every time.
If I get the chance to swim in college, I promise I will not disappoint.
