Personal Statement

I am graduating in 2023 but I am listed as a 2025 athlete because that is when I will be attending college. I am going on a church mission and will be gone in Argentina for two years. I will return in June of 2025.

My sophomore year I had a jumping coach move to my school and help coach me with long jump. I wasn't jumping like I wanted to so I switched which foot I was jumping off of from my left to my right. Switching to my right felt natural and I transitioned smoothly. My coach said that since I can jump off either foot I should try triple jump, so halfway through the year I tried triple jump. I feel in love with the feeling of jumping after that. It felt exhilarating to jump through the air into the sand. I qualified for state in both of the jumps. I ended up jumping 22ft 0in in long jump and 44ft 3in in triple jump, winning state in both events and breaking our school records for both.

My junior year my jumping coach moved away so I had to coach myself. My hamstring got injured during the middle of the season and I had to do therapy for that. My hamstrings felt better by districts but then I got patella tendinitis on my right knee during districts. I didn't jump like I wanted to at state, I won triple and long jump again but only jumped 21'8" and 43'8". I was really frustrated with myself for not performing like I wanted to. So over the summer I did therapy on my knee and strengthened myself to help prevent injuries in the future. I was in the weight room a lot more and went from 160lbs to 170lbs by the end of XC season in October.

This year, my senior year, I still don't have a jumping coach and I needed something to motivate me. I found out that BYU hosts a decathlon in three weeks and I decided that I wanted to try it. I've only ever done 4 out of the 10 events before. Three weeks before the meet I tried pole vault. The next week I tried high jump and discus. The last week before the meet I tried hurdles and shot put. At the decathlon I held a javelin for the first time. My score ended up being 5460, it was the funnest track meet I've been too. A decathlon is something that I want to try again, and I know I can do better if I had a coach to help me. Now that my decathlon is finished I will turn my attention back to events I love, jumping.
