I’ve played basketball for 10 years. I started at 5 years old and fell in love with the competitive nature and team aspect of the game. So when I first tried out for my school team in 7th grade, I was really excited to finally be able to play for my school. Hearing I was on “B” team disappointed me after all my hard work, I felt overlooked and undervalued. 8th grade was the same story, the coach kept the same girls on A and B team as the previous year, again I was really disappointed as I knew I had improved. Going into trying out for my high school, I worked really hard and had improved my inside game. I was placed on the freshman team. I really felt that I was good enough for JV and making the freshmen team just motivated me to work harder. I went the the local park and work on stretching my shooting range. I learned new moves, and improved my ball handling. I went to the courts to practice every week, sometimes 3-4 times, and often on days I had other practices and games with my AAU team. This year trying out as a sophomore I was determined to make varsity. I had worked hard and knew I was prepared and ready. Come the time we found out ours teams, I was told I had made JV and I needed to improve my offensive game and my rebounding. I was over being disappointed and just worked even harder. In practices I worked to get every rebound and when I got the ball, I worked to score. After playing 2 games on JV I was pulled up to play a tournament with the varsity team. After that tournament I was told I had earned my spot on varsity, but I didn’t stop their I kept working, and became a starter. I’ve learned through basketball that I am very determined and can accomplish anything I set my mind to through hard work. I am a leader on the court I will hold you accountable if you make a mistake but I‘ll also be the first to give you a high five after a good play, or help you off the ground after you’ve been fouled.
