Personal Statement

Tying for individual first place in the Greater Cleveland Conference Championship tournament and qualifying for the Ohio Districts Tournament as an individual during my freshman year have been the most memorable moments of my golf career so far. Although, growing up in a military family, has exposed me to some other interesting things that have greatly influenced my life. Both of my parents were in the Marine Corps, so when I was younger so we were fortunate enough to live all over the United States and other countries.  This childhood allowed me to experience various cultures, learn to make friends easily, develop my social skills, and learn to adapt to change.  I first started playing golf when my dad took me to a driving range when we lived in California.  I was about four years old when I first picked up a club.  I played my first full round of golf from the front tees when I was seven years old in Kansas City.  Then within the next couple months we moved to Okinawa, Japan and I became part of my dad’s regular Sunday foursome.  I was on the driving range at 4:00-4:30 a.m., for our 5:15-5:30 a.m. tee time, at 7 and 8 years old.  I have been working towards my goal of playing college golf for about 4-5 years now, even though I am only a freshman this year. College and golf has been a big goal of mine for several years, primarily in hopes that I could use my golf to help get me to school so I can get a good education and a good job.  My brother has a rare birth defect called Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA) which affects his vision.  He is legally blind, but currently does have some vision.  Over time the condition is supposed to take away all of his vision, and currently there is not treatment for his condition.  So, we are just sitting here watching him lose his sight little by little.  Well, I want to try to do something about it.  My goal is to get a good education.  I would like to pursue a career in the medical field because I am fascinated by the animal and human bodies, and how they work. Then once I get my career established, I wanted to start a foundation to make financial contributions towards the research towards the cure of my brother’s condition.

When I first started playing golf it was just for fun and it was a way to hang out with dad; but after a while I fell in love with the sport.  Through all the years playing golf, I have learned numerous things because a round of golf closely mimics the ups and downs of one’s life.  The most important thing I have learned however, is composure.  When I first started my tournament career, I used to get so frustrated and angry over a bad shot or decision, it would wind up costing me strokes for the next 4-5 holes.  Now I have learned to control my emotions, stay composed for the entire round, and I have grown as person both on and off the course when things don’t always go my way.  I continue to strive to get better, always looking for ways to improve my game, preparing for the remainder of high school and for college golf.  I am dedicated to my school work, my golf, and carrying on my family’s military heritage by being the only Freshman to command Air Force JROTC Color Guard.  I'm looking for a program that will be a good fit for me academically and athletically.   I believe I not only have the talent to compete for a college team, but the character, work-ethic, and leadership skills to impact your program shortly after arriving.
