Personal Statement
Hi my name is Amber Bretz and I am a Senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. I have been a member of the high school varsity lacrosse team since Freshman year, and Sophomore/Junior years I was the starting center. I have been a team Captain, and member of SALT- the Student Athlete Leadership Team, since Junior year. I am very interested in taking my lacrosse experience to the next level by playing at the collegiate level. I believe I could contribute greatly to a college level team because I have been told that I am very coachable athlete and a team player. Being part of a team has taught me the value of leadership skills, and most notably the importance of conveying leadership in a way that encourages a cooperative spirit. It has also taught me how to accept criticism and comments from others in a positive way. The need to accept responsibility for ones own mistakes and to be accountable becomes crystal clear when in a team environment. I believe these lessons that I have learned while on the field will serve me well in my continued academic pursuits, college athletics and life in general.
While athletics will always play a role in my life, I am keenly aware of the importance of academics. As a three season varsity high school athlete, I am aware of the need for prioritizing and time management. My most recent GPA is a 3.9 and I have made the distinguished (High) or Regular honor roll for all marking periods of my Sophomore and Junior years. Being a student athlete has taught me how to set and prioritize goals. Being part of a team has also taught me that teamwork is often critical to success. The concept of teamwork directly relates to many careers, but especially to my chosen career path; the field of nursing. I want to assure you that I am dedicated to excelling academically and athletically, and in a manner that will reflect the school, my coaches and my fellow teammates in the most positive and respectful way.
