Personal Statement
Hi, my name is August Graves. I live in Brooklyn, NY, and I am a dedicated soccer player with a passion for learning. I consistently try to be the best version of myself, representing my commitment and loyalty through many different aspects in my life.
Despite the lack of easy access to my club field (a 45 minute train ride), I attend practices 4+ times a week in every season but the summer. I work privately with my coach in order to continuously improve. Academically, I maintain a decent unweighted average in one of the top schools in the city, including three rigorous AP courses. I have an incredibly personal connection with my teachers, coaches and friends, providing insight on my well-rounded high school career.
Outside of soccer and school, I spend my time outdoors. I am an avid hiker, mostly in the White Mountains (NH). I have also demonstrated leadership in Outward Bound Northwest, in which we backpacked in the Cascades (WA) and volunteered at a fire shelter for victims of a massive fire occurring at that time. I have also thru-hiked along the GR5 in the French Alps. In other leadership/volunteer activities, I have visited the Dominican Republic with Global Leadership Adventures, in which we built schools out of plastic bottles, painted schools, cleaned beaches and dug trenches to avoid flooding of towns. Helping people is one of my favorite things to do, which I believe adds to my appeal as a recruit.
My biggest reason to remain a soccer player would be my passion for the sport. I will never not love the feeling I get after scoring, assisting, or even faking somebody out. I have also worked incredibly hard to get to where I am today. With consistent and frequent practices, I believe that I have truly improved in my more recent years as a soccer player; namely in ball control, strength, shooting, and passing skills. Furthermore, I am attentive to my mistakes and always make mental notes in order to improve for the next time. I will continue to work hard and love what I do, and will not stop until the day I put my cleats away for good.
