I always knew that I liked soccer. It was one of the main parts of my life and my personality. However, in March 2020 the world around me really shut down. I was unable to attend school or soccer. I was really confined inside my house for months. During the first I thought, “Wow, this is great”. I get a break from school and practice for a few weeks. Soon that two week break turned into months, and then I was starting my freshmen year in my bed. My life had completely changed in a few months without any warning. I began to realize how much of an impact soccer really had on my life.
I started playing soccer around the age of 5. My parents were the coaches, and neither of them had any background in soccer. That was the only year that they coached me. After that I played rec league where I made many of my lifelong friends who I am still playing with. In third grade I started playing for my first club team and have been playing club ever since.
With the effects of the pandemic we were not able to have a normal high school soccer team my freshman year. Unfortunately, we were unable to start the season until February. If I am being honest, I was extremely nervous about high school soccer in general. I had really only played for one team and one coach. I was not confident in my soccer ability at all. I knew that I was good on my club team, but I had not played at the highest club level. This made me very self-conscious. For my freshman year the coach decided to keep all of the freshman on JV, which I was disappointed about because I truly felt that I could play at the varsity level. However, I ended up making the most of JV. I was made captain and that was a really good leadership role for me. That season really changed soccer for me. I was playing against girls that I knew played at the highest club level. I realized that I was keeping up with all of them. This really changed my game and made me realize that I was really good at soccer. This made me want to work harder and improve my game even more!
This last summer and my sophomore season I have really learned that I really want to continue to play soccer in college. I have been putting in the time and pushing myself. This last spring I tried out out and made my club’s 04/05 travel team, and I have been guest playing with two other of my club’s premiere teams. My summer consisted of pretty much soccer. I was practicing 4 days per week and and going to tournaments almost every weekend and I loved it! The more time I was spending on the ball has really improved my game and also made me realize how passionate I am about playing college soccer.
This fall I made my school’s Varsity soccer team. I had a very successful season. I was a starter on the team the whole season, and most games did not come out. I was chosen to make 4A First Team. This is an accomplishment that I am very proud of. I was the only player from my school and I was one of two sophomores to make the team. I was the leading goal scorer for my team with 11 goals and 4 assists for the season. I also had a hat trick in our senior night game. All of my hard work is paying off. I know that I had to step out of my comfort zone to grow.
Outside of soccer, I am a student. I have always worked really hard to excel in my academics. I have had a 4.0 GPA since I was in middle school and am part of the highly capable program. I am also planning to run track again for the first time since the pandemic.
