Personal Statement
I Khalidah Ahmad, an African American, female, has always worked extremely hard to obtain recognition and success in every challenge presented to me. As a low income student, getting an education is the only option to get out of poverty, and to show the world that, "It's not where you come from, it's where you are going." Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, attending college will open unimaginable opportunities for me, and open new doors to the world around me. I attend Robert Lindblom Math and Science Academy, where I strive to maintain at least a 4.0 Grade Point Average.I kept a strong GPA, slightly above a 4.0, I participated in multiple sports and clubs, like Cross Country, Track and Field, Advanced Band, Yoga Club, and the National Honors Society, just to name a few. I have participated in both Cross Country and Track and Field, for 3 years. I didn't participate last year due to a knee injury I suffered during a Cross Country meet. My mile times are roughly between 6 and 7 minutes, and I can sprint 400 meters in 1:08.
My parents instilled in me a love for God, duty, and respect for others. When I assist others with homework, caring for those with disabilities, or displaying other simple acts of kindness, it makes me feel as though I’m giving something back to humanity, while gaining a greater sense of self-worth, and building character. Last year my family nearly lost our home, and we are currently going through a home modification. I am in critical financial need, because we are currently living this gas off. We are on a fixed income, having to depend on food stamps, and my mother’s disability check. The issues in my life have made be stronger, humble, and thankful for the basic things in life, food, shelter, and clothing. It is the driving force that makes me want to go further and do better. People take things in life for granted and it’s not until you go without, that you become thankful for the little things in life. Being in this living situation has been a stepping stone for me, and made me realize that I can strive and overcome, despite all of the obstacles that I am faced with.
