Personal Statement
In my sophomore year of high school, my friend talked me into joining track and field. She was the only high jumper on the team and convinced me to high jump with her. At first I was nervous, scared and uncertain about my ability to jump over a bar backwards. We practiced together and stayed late to work on our form with my friend’s dad who was our only coach. At our first meet, I cleared 4’ 2” and was hooked. My focus was always on improving my form and physical strength to achieve the next height. By the end of the season, my personal record was 4’6”. By the end of my junior season, I had gained four more inches and held the same personal record as my friend. I found that working out together and competing against each other helped both of us push ourselves to be our best. Over this summer I have worked with a personal coach and attended a track and field camp to continue learning how to improve my performance. As long as I stay focused on my goal and open to the trainer’s guidance, I feel my abilities will continue to grow. I am excited for the indoor season to start.
While high jump is extremely important to me, I understand the importance of having a solid education to build a lifelong career. Obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing is at the top of my list for future achievements. Both of my parents have successful careers and I can see the value of working in a field you are passionate about. I am excited to find a college that can meet both my educational and athletic goals to assist me with my continued growth. Whether it be a teacher or a coach, I value the time, effort and instruction they invest in me to aid in the process.
