I am a 2024 transfer OH from Arizona Western College. It is my goal to be an a leader on and off the court. I am a very coachable, fast learner, adapting quickly to new situations and people.
Unlike many if not most college athletes who have been playing their chosen sport since they could walk, that is not my story. My dad served in the US Navy, and it was often difficult to get, and stay involved in the extracurricular activities because my family moved often.
My dad retired in 2016 when I as in middle school. I played a little in middle school, but it was in 9th grade that I got serious about the sport. I tried out, in my freshman year, but didn't make the team. I was not deterred, but determined. After a spring/summer of hard work and training, I made the team in my 10th grade year, and was on my way. But in the spring of my 10th grade year (2020), the whole world stopped. There was no in person school and no volleyball. A few months later, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and was getting life saving treatment. Because of his health risk should he be infected by covid-19, I didn't return to a traditional school setting in the fall of 2020, my junior year. I was disappointed, but still determined, and not deterred.
Midway through my junior year my dad's treatment ended. I was able to get of the house a little more, and immediately knew that I wanted to get back to playing volleyball. The high school season was over, but I learned about something called club volleyball, and that season was just getting started. I joined a club team, and right away knew that I was playing with girls who had been playing for many more years than me. I was determined to work hard and do my absolute best. For my senior I returned to in person school the varsity high school team and the 18-1 club team. By the end of both school and club seasons, I had been named player of the game multiple times, and as a starter, helped to lead my club team to winning and placing in multiple tournaments.
Even though I only played 2 seasons of volleyball, I had numerous offers to play at both 2 and 4 year colleges. I accepted an offer at a Junior College. During my sophomore year I was named Player of the Match and help my team to win the NJCAA 2023 Region 1 Championship.
My volleyball and life journey have had some ups and downs, especially over the past 3 years. In spite of the uncertainties and challenges, what has been consistent is my hard work, commitment, determination, tenacity and strength, and it's those characteristics that I bring to collegiate athletic program.
