My name is Imani Kinlock, and my specialty positions are libero and defensive specialist for Eastridge High School. My volleyball journey began in the 6th grade where I fell in love with the thrill and excitement of the game. The intensity of the sport forced me to remain attentive and agile in order to adapt to the high level of play. As I continued to play in middle school, I also learned the importance of building good team chemistry with my teammates which I went on to play with in high school.
Because I was given the opportunity to play every position in middle school, I developed a clear understanding of the game which informed my style of play in high school. Once I moved up to the varsity team in the 10th grade as starting libero, I quickly learned the key aspects of volleyball such as communication, integrity, resilience, and drive. As a Libero and the eyes of the court, I developed effective communication skills in order to, for example, let my hitters know what is open on the opposing side.
Volleyball has also taught me time management. I learned to balance my responsibilities on the court with my extracurricular commitments off the court. I am in the Full International Baccalaureate Diploma program and the National Honor Society. I was voted the 2023 Class President and I am the Senior representative for the Student Government. I am also an active member in my church community as a singer in the choir. In addition, I work two jobs; one at Unity Hospital Child Care Center and the other at Burlington. My commitment to these activities and my dedication to the game are what motivate me to manage all of these responsibilities while still maintaining a valuable and successful role on my team.
On the court, I am a player who motivates my team to be better even in the face of defeat. When we’re down two sets, I always remind my teammates that we have three more to go and the game isn’t over until it’s over. As a libero, I am committed to being a player that my teammates can always count on to work hard for the first touch. That being said, I am always open to constructive criticism so that I can continue to grow and improve as a player, teammate, and person. At the collegiate level, I think it is important for me to find a team that is willing to work together and constantly striving to be better in every aspect of the game.
