Personal Statement
As a 5th grader just being introduced to volleyball I didn’t know that I would like it as much as I do. It was new to me and my school. I simply loved it! Studying the girls on the court trying to figure out where the ball was going, reacting. The thrill I get on the court is indescribable. I was hooked! I continued to play. In the summer I would play on the beach for fun, and could not wait to the next season began. I played four years at my grade school. I was voted to the All-Star game in 8th grade. I was thrilled and honored. When my freshman year in high school approached I was nervous to try out for a high school team because most of the girls played club ball. I didn’t! I really wanted to make the varsity team, but did not. I made the JV team and was thrilled about the upcoming season. I received tons of experience by attending tournaments and I became a swinger. Sadly I changed schools, but sometimes change is good. I began a new school whose volleyball program was only 3 years old. I didn’t even try-out, that's because the coach saw me playing with my other team at tournaments and said he would love to have me on his team. Yes, it was an adjustment but I was up for the challenge. My first year with my new team was tough both mentally and physically but I persevered. I played on the varsity team as a starter. Our team was District Champs and we went to States. Sadly we lost. My second year on the team was slightly different, I now bonded with my team mates better and I feel the dynamics of the team was great. Our team again won Districts and went on to States, but again we lost, but this loss was different. I was sad that we lost but didn’t feel defeated. We played a team which is ranked higher than us, most of the girls play club ball and have played for years, not the team I was on. We fought hard, we did not hand the other team the win. I was able to walk out of that gym with my head held high and look forward to us meeting again next year. That is one major goal I have, for me and my team to be State Champions! I hope to accomplish this in my senior year. I want to continue my path in Volleyball and play in college. I am always watching on TV the college games and can see myself there. Watching the Olympics this year even motivated me more. I turned to my parents and said "that will be me someday". That is my dream, my goal. It is what I have been aspiring for since 5th grade.
