Personal Statement
I am Shea M. James a Senior at West Ashley High School in Charleston, South Carolina.
I have been playing volleyball since sixth grade of middle school. My seventh grade year I played school and club volleyball for Charleston Juniors. I matured greatly as a player and my volleyball career earning the MVP for the regional championship tournaments. My eight grade year I tried out for Junior Varsity for West Ashley High. I made Junior Varsity and continued the year as a starter, as an outside hitter. During the off season I worked with a coach personally every week to further develop my skills and techniques. My freshman year of high school I made the Varsity Volleyball Team. I was a starter as a freshman on Varsity. I played as an outside hitter and as a defense specialist. When club came around I played for the Charleston Juniors again. I was captain and a starter where I played as outside hitter and defense specialist. As a sophomore I played Varsity once again as a starter. I developed my skills so much over the course of the season! I also attended clinicals weekly to continue practicing during the club season. My club season with Charleston Juniors was a time of true development with my team mates on a skill and social level.
For the past four years I have attended multiple Volleyball Camps hosted by various colleges, both in and out of state.
During my Freshman and Sophomore year I also ran Track & Field and plan to continue running through my last year of high school. I ran 200 and 400 Meter Hurdles.
I also workout at a local gym and have been trained by personal trainers to work on further conditioning skills, my endurance level and quickness both on the court and track field.
I am proud to say that I lettered my 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade year in Volleyball and also lettered in Track my Freshman and Sophomore Year.
As much as I care about volleyball, I invest in my academics as well. I am very diligent with my grades and school work ethics. I always work to the best of my abilities. I am a member of the National Scholars Honors Society and National Society of High School Scholars. I am enrolled in my schools Honors and Advanced Placement Programs. I was awarded the World Affairs Council of Charleston Global Studies Award. I currently have a GPA of 4.4.
Due to my GPA average and my diligence with completing high school requirements, I have elected to graduate a year early. This has essentially eliminate my Junior High school year.
I too am interested in the Fine Arts. I have danced through my local Elementary and Middle School Experiences and upon entering High School I continued with the Fine Arts with a focus on Theatre.
I am also actively involved in my community. I have volunteered at a local Thrift Store under the nonprofit agency, Hearts for the Arts Foundation, which supports the creative arts programs in local schools within my community.
For additional volunteering opportunities I have served at a local Kids Summer Sport Camp and for an additional sports events that was hosted by my high school.
I am currently a member of the International Club with a focus on Global Studies and Awareness.
As a summer job, I became a certified Life Guard and worked at a local Water Park.
