Personal Statement

My name is Josh Hickey and I have a passion for wrestling. My hard work has paid off with success on and off the mat. 

-2015 Wisconsin Freestyle State Championship Runner-Up
-2015 Wisconsin Greco State Championship Runner-Up
-Medaled in FS/Greco State in previous years. 
-2015 folkstyle state qualifier (D1)
-2015 national tournament true second (Junior, 132) at Tour of America, Dominate in the Dells. 
-2014 national tournament champion (Cadet, 126) at Tour of America, Dominate in the Dells. 
-Wisconsin’s All-division All-state team
-As a high school junior, I achieved 100 varsity wins

I began my wrestling career at the age of 5 when I joined our local wrestling club, the Cedarburg Matdogs.  I was a regular attendee and tournament participant through my youth; ultimately, graduating from Matdogs in the Matdog Elite program and becoming the first Matdog to wrestle from Kindergarten through 8th grade.  In 7th & 8th grade, I supplemented my training by traveling over an hour each way to wrestle with the X-Factor Elite program in Manitowoc, WI.  Beginning in 7th grade I also began offseason training, twice attending Ben Peterson’s “Camp of Champs” and a number of camps and clinics from Askren Wrestling Academy.  Since entering high school, I have trained in season and offseason with Askren Wrestling Academy and qualified for the Wisconsin National Team in 2014 and 2015.

Away from the mat, I am regularly an honors or high honors student at Cedarburg High School.  Cedarburg High School is regularly recognized as one of the state's and nation's most competitive and highest ranking schools - this year receiving a National Blue Ribbon Award, one of the most prestigious awards for a school.  This year I was named Honorable Mention for the Wisconsin All-State, All-Academic team.  I am also invested in my community and church.  I have a passion for music and express this passion by helping to lead worship at my church and by composing and recording my own music.  Over the past two years, I’ve been honored to advance to the National Fine Arts Festival in various musical categories – this past year achieving a “Superior” rating for my performance.
Wrestling collegiately is a priority for me.  I am progressing in my craft every year and I know that I am far from peaking.  Academically, it is my strong desire to attend a college or university with high academic standards, where I intend to pursue studies in Business and Marketing.
