Thank you for allowing me some time to tell you a little about me. As my profile shows, my name is Cannon Rodgers and I’m a senior at Vestavia Hills High School and a starting right handed, 6’-5”, 225 lb., 18 year old starting pitcher for our baseball team. I’m involved with the Boy’s FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and Helping Hands at my school. I’m also a “Peer Helper.” It’s a little funny that my parents named me Cannon and I end up as a pitcher. My name is actually a family name. It was the maiden name of my grandmother’s mom (my great grandmother). I live in Vestavia Hills, a suburb city of Birmingham with my mom, dad & older sister (when she’s home – she’s in college) all of whom I love dearly. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My family and I are members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Vestavia. While I love the game of baseball (I have since I started playing at age 5), my relationship with God, my relationship with my family and school come first. Don’t mistake the ranking of baseball in my life to mean it’s not important to me – it’s very important to me. When I’m practicing or playing in a game my focus is 100% on being the best player that I can be, being the best leader I can be, and helping my team in any way I can.
As I’ve already stated, I love baseball and I do my best and work my hardest to improve every day whether in the weight room during off-season or on the field during a game. I have 5 pitches that I use – 2-seam, 4-seam, curve, split & change-up. My “go to” pitch is my 4-seam that is consistently in the 90’s. I’m very “coachable” and take constructive criticism well. I’m harder on myself than my coaches are and I’m a team player. For 8 years, I’ve been working with an independent coach on hitting and throwing. I also work with an ex-MLB pitcher who is a family friend. Three years ago, at age 14, I started for an 18U travel team. I was the only 14 year old on the team; all other players were 17 & 18. I am a member of Under Armour’s Baseball Factory National team. I’ve been on their team for 3 years and continue to play for them when I can. As a freshman at VHHS, I batted .450. My sophomore season I batted .375 and as a starting pitcher, my record 6 wins and no losses with one save and an ERA of 0.427. I pitched 32 2/3 innings with 35 strike-outs, 15 walks, allowing only 11 hits. This year, I have an ERA of 1.9 with 29 K's in 33 innings. This summer, along with playing on the Under Armour National Team, I will also play for Team Easton.
For a long time, it’s been my goal to play baseball in college at the highest level possible at a school I enjoy attending. Being from the south, that’s where my college preference is, but; I’m open to almost any opportunity that will allow me to fulfill my goals. While I’m not quite sure at this point what my academic focus in college will be, I will graduate with a degree in my chosen major and I would love to be able to achieve my academic goals and baseball goals together.
Again, thank you for allowing me some of your time. I hope that this helps you to know me a little better. If you have any questions or would like to talk more, please contact me anytime.
