Personal Statement

Baseball has always been a grounding force in my life. The game has taught me to have respect for myself, those around me, my friends, my family, my team, and the game itself. I have learned that talent is not the only factor; you have to work harder than everyone else, if you really want to be the best. The field has been my greatest teacher in many regards. I learned to control my emotions, to think and analyze an entire field of play and to become a leader amongst my teammates and peer groups.

One of the things that I love about catching is the mental game and the vantage point of seeing the whole field laid out in front of you. There is no greater feeling than when I am in the zone with the pitcher and my team is in their groove. One lesson that being a catcher taught me was that while I have the vantage point of the field, the whole team has eyes on me. My actions and my attitude are on display for the whole field and can dramatically affect how my team feels and acts. If we are having a bad game and I hang my head the whole team sees that and it can bring them down. However, staying positive and keeping focused and up beat can project the same feeling to the rest of the field. Just learning that control has helped me to not only be a better catcher and player but a better teammate and leader.

While playing baseball at the collegiate level is really important to me, it is also important for me is to find a program where I can continue to excel academically as well as athletically. As an honor roll student, taking all honors and advanced courses, I want to continue to grow as a leader both on and off the field, both physically and mentally. Given a goal I promise that I will attack it with focus and determination. I will always strive to be an example to my team and to grow and learn from every experience I'm faced with. Given the opportunity, I promise to bring integrity and respect not only to the game, but to the University and the team as well.

  • IMG CAMP MVP SUMMER 2020. Feedback from Coaches: Offense: "Andrew shows above average offensive skills. Gap to gap strength with upside to have power potential. Andrew repeats high level movements in the swing that generate torque and bat speed. Andrew shows plus bat speed with the ability to drive the baseball to all fields. Very athletic actions in the swing. Gets the most out of his body. Very simple, smooth load and stride that aid in setting the hands and lower half in a powerful launch position. Overall Andrew did a great job offensively through his time here at IMGA. We have no doubt he will develop into a high level hitter in the future." DEFENSE: "regarding your defense I want to tell you that I was very impressed by your knowledge of the game and natural abilities. Keep working hard and stay focused on your goal." CHARACTER and WORK ETHIC: "First of all I want to thank you for allowing me to work with you these past two weeks and grow together. I really liked your character and work ethic and I want you to maintain that attitude throughout your career".

  • #32 Andrew Murphy: Andrew had a great week for us in Italy. His catching fundamentals were impressive, especially blocking balls in the dirt. He also played admirably and left field. Andrew's big focus is going to be strength and physical development. When throwing both from the mound and behind the plate, he must develop more arm and leg strength. His hitting at times was very timely and effective. He is a coach's dream with a wonderful attitude and personality. I hope he sticks with the game and works on his physical development as that is the only thing holding him back as a fine varsity player. I look forward to staying on top of his progress as he goes through high school.
  • Camp/Event
  • Baseball Factory D.C. All Star Experience
  • 7/14/18 to 7/18/18
  • Andrew is a coachable C/1B prospect who continued to work hard on his skills during his time at the D.C. All Star Experience. Behind the plate, Andrew moves to block on time and keeps the ball in the center of his body. He presents a good target to the pitcher and makes a clean exchange to throw, keeping his throws accurate to his target. Andrew can improve defensively by long tossing to build up his arm strength. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a square stride. He gets back into his load well and works to barrel up the baseball. Andrew can improve as a hitter by shortening his stride to improve his timing. Overall, Andrew is a solid, young prospect who has continued to show steady improvements on the field
  • Camp/Event
  • Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Dodgertown
  • 8/03/17 to 8/06/17
  • Andrew is a coachable C prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Historic Dodgertown. Behind the plate, Andrew shows efficient footwork and covers ground well when blocking balls in the dirt. He receives the ball with soft hands and has a clean exchange on his throws to 2B. Andrew can improve defensively by sitting in a lower stance to receive pitches. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a tall stance and takes a square stride. He gets back into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half, leading to solid contact. Andrew can improve as a hitter by working to keep his balance in the center of his body in his stance. With seven more years to develop, Andrew has the time and potential to further progress his game.
