Personal Statement

My name is Blake Appel and I am a senior at Gulfport High School. GHS is a 6-A high school located in Gulfport, MS. This season I will be starting at first base and pitching as part of the starting rotation for the varsity team.  In addition to my school team, I have played competitive travel ball with the Louisiana Stix which is based in Slidell,LA and NOLA Baseball from New Orleans, LA. While I work extremely hard on the field, I also excel off the field with my school work. I have a 3.5 GPA, take all honors classes, and have scored a 25 on my ACT. I am determined to play baseball at the collegiate level and to use the opportunity to pursue a college degree.

  • 12/27/12 to 12/30/12
  • 12/27/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament In Blake's most recent Factory event he displayed his true intangibles and work ethic. While at first base, he was aggressive to balls and showed an ability to be patient and pick balls in the dirt. He is also a good target at the bag given his size. He can work on his footwork around the bag, and improving his agility will also help with his defense and footwork. At the plate, he battles and has an ability to use the entire field. When he strides, he has a tendency to stay open, as in his setup, and gets uphill, at times. He shows good rhythm, fast bat speed, square contact, and a through lower half. On the mound, he throws three pitches, all for strikes, with his knuckle-ball being his best off-speed pitch. He gets to a good balance point and stays in line to the dish with level shoulders. Finding a more consistent tempo/rhythm and finishing more completely will help him overall on the mound. In all, he is a great target at first base, has a projectable pitchers body, and shows ability at the dish.
  • Camp/Event
  • Baseball Factory - Premium Video Program - Chalmette, LA
  • 9/23/12 to 9/23/12
  • 09/23/2012 - Premium Video Program - Chalmette (New Orleans), LA Blake is a tall, lanky 1B/RHP that will graduate in 2015. Feet are quick / active and he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean and he presents well out front. Throws are accurate but needs to improve foot work and build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Appel shows a balanced approach and loads well. He makes contact, mainly to the pull side as he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and improve hitting grade. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 72-74 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup and throws a knuckleball with downward action. Stock on the mound will rise quickly as more arm strength is gained and he throws more strikes. With 3 years to further develop, Blake has abilities with time and room to improve.
