Personal Statement
Academic excellence has been the standard for me from the start of my education. I take pride in being the very best in all of my endeavors. I recognize that is a difficult baseline to maintain. But that is what has been instilled in me. My goal is to always be the best, the challenge is determining the necessary path to reach it.
Through 11 years of education, I have met my standard academically. As I was about to enter Spanish IV Honors. I asked my peers about the class and they all told me to get out as fast as I possibly could. They said, “The teacher is a nightmare” and “It feels more like a college placement course than a typical honors class”. This feedback was coming from native Spanish speakers. Despite the warnings, I took the class. After the first weeks of classes I realized the warnings I received were accurate. I sat there like a deer in headlights as everyone around me was communicating in a language I could barely understand. In a conversation with my parents, they told me I had two options. First, I could drop out of the class and move down to the standard Spanish 4 class. Second, I could stick it out, continuously battle and work hard toward success because it was basically a small scale simulation of a college classroom. I truly contemplated returning back to a standard spanish class, but my parents never raised me to quit a task that I had started. Determined, I pushed on. I have worked harder in this class than any other. I meet with my teacher weekly. My homework requires the greatest portion of my time. I received a C+ in the class my first marking period. This was the first grade below a B+ in my academic career. I now have an A- entering the final weeks of the second marking period.
This class has taught me that with enough preparation and practice, I have the ability to accomplish anything. It also taught me to no longer be ashamed to ask others for assistance in their areas of expertise. I have learned through this experience that a little bit of failure is needed to be successful. There are lessons that must be learned which can only be ingrained through struggle. I am not afraid of challenges in the classroom or on the field. I am resilient. I am a competitor. I am the type of player who wants to be coached. I am a player who sets high standards for himself. I want to be accountable to my teammates. No matter how tough things get in school, on the field, or in life, it is never an excuse to quit. I intend to bring my standards, my work ethic, my willingness to learn and my determination to your team and your university.
