Raymundo Vazquez '24 Recruiting Profile

My name is Raymundo (“Ray”) Vazquez,

I am a tall 17-year old senior (2024) standing 6’3” and weighing 195 pounds. I attend Friendswood High School in Texas (suburban Houston).  We have a great team, finishing our 2022 season as runner-ups in the 5A Texas High School State Championship.  This will be my third year as a starting / long relief pitcher on the varsity team.  In addition to my high school team, I was just recently accepted for a second summer season with Marucci Elite Texas - Wallace out of Houston.  Other than Marucci, I have only played for two other select teams.  For me, it was important to find a good coach that I trusted and helped me develop.  I have been lucky to be coached by some great ones, including former major leaguers Adam Dunn, Aaron Hill, and Josh Jones.  My current pitching coach is Dave Evans, but I owe a lot to my first pitching coaches, Jim Bolt and Cameron Johnson. My fastball currently sits in the mid to upper 80s, and I have worked very hard to develop multiple off-speed pitches, including a change-up, curveball, and a slider–all of which I can throw for a strike or strikeout pitch.  I believe I am a coachable and loyal athlete, and I think my coaches would agree.  Constructive criticism is an important part of improving as a player.  I work hard on and off the field, as well as in the classroom.  My current cumulative GPA is 3.9.  Strength, conditioning, and diet are priorities for me and I constantly strive to improve my performance. For the mental part of my game, I actively study hitters and their swings to determine what pitch to throw for the best outcome.  I generally produce many weak ground balls and pop-ups.  I try not to get “into my head” during a game or allow others to do it either.  I understand that a pitcher is faced with a lot of pressure, and I need to manage it to get the job done.
