I have been a leader on my sports teams over the last several years. In most cases I am on the younger side of the age group for my teams. I take time to help pick up my teammates sprits when they are struggling or need a little support during a tough time on or off the field. An example of this leadership was during my freshman year I had an injury and was not able to play for a portion of our season. But I wanted to still contribute to my team, so I came to all of our practices and games and provided support to my team and individual to my teammates on skills I could teach them while I was out. I am looking for more opportunities to learn about leadership as I learn and grow in my high school experience.
I am a hard working focused student and athlete. I put my family first and care about others. I am a strong competitor in school and sports but not at the expense of others. I enjoy supporting my friends and sister in thier challenges. Our family has a family motto of “Better than yesterday”. My parents have taught my sister and I to always try to be better than yesterday in school, sports, relationships. I have learned it is ok to make a mistakes as long as I recognize and learn of them.
My education goals is to continue on to college. I am still exploring fields for my career, I have interest in sports or physical therapy and business paths. I also enjoy the outdoors and have started looking into Game wardens roles as law enforcement and stewards of public land and animals. Being involved with New Braunfels leadership I feel will provide experiences that will help educate me on other career paths.
The three most important characteristics of a leader are; Integrity, compassion, and communication skills.
First and foremost you always have to have high integrity as a person and even more so as a leader. I do not believe you can be a leader without integrity, if not you will not have the trust and faith from your fellow Teammates/group members/citizens you are leading.
Compassion, shows you care and understand and allows you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. If you cannot understand the party you are trying to lead you will fail them and yourself.
Lastly, without good communication skills you can not gain the understanding of issues you are trying to lead and gain the compassion of the topic or group. Nor can you demonstrate your integrity to the group and your plan to lead or support.
Thank you,
Joshua Lile
