Personal Statement
Hi Coaches,
My name is Neal Matson. I am currently a Junior at Neillsville High School. I am 6'1 and 190 pounds shortstop/ pitcher. I started on the varsity both my Freshman and Sophomore year. I earned second team All Conference award my Freshman year and first team All Conference award my Sophomore year. I also earned MVP of my team at the end of my Sophomore year. As a team we took second in conference in 2012 and first in conference this past year. My goal for my two remaining years of high school baseball is to earn Player of the Year for the Easter Cloverbelt Conference. I have dreamed of playing baseball at the collegiate level since I started playing which was at the age of four. Having both parents playing college sports themselves, made me grow up in a house filled with sports. My mom played softball and volleyball at UW Steven's Point earning a All American award her Senior year for softball and earning a place in the UW Steven's Point Hall of Fame. My Dad played Baseball at UW Oshkosh his Freshman and Sophomore year then transferred to Winona State University his Junior and Senior year. They went to the World Series both years. Baseball has played a big part in my family's life and I would love to continue the legacy the great sport has created within our family.
I am a very competitive person which carries over to my work ethic. My Dad, who is also my coach, taught me to never take a day off from practice. I work hard day in and day out, always staying after practice to get extra reps in to increase my skill level. I go into every game thinking this is the game to win, and leaving everything on the field I am a strong believer that hard work in the weight room pays off during the sport seasons. I love to go in the weight room, it is something I look forward to every day. My max weight for bench press is 230 lbs and my max squat is 420 lbs. I also play basketball. I played on the varsity team both my Freshman and Sophomore year.
My education is very important to me. Having both parents as teachers has made me learn at a young age that sports alone will not get me to college. I have a GPA of 3.33 and looking to improve on that this incoming year. I work extremely hard for every grade I get. I come home from practice and usually spend most of my night studying for any classes that need improvement. I understand that school comes before sports and I work hard to keep my grades in good condition.
Playing college baseball is a dream of mine that I am willing to work hard to accomplish. I know it will be a tough road and I am looking forward to the challenge.
