MJ Schwab Class of 2019
My early athletic life involved a number of sports including soccer, basketball, track and swimming. I initially focused primarily on soccer and enjoyed great success with the team that made the state cup championship. When I was in fifth grade, I took up field hockey because my sister was involved in the program and it looked like fun. We had a wonderful coach Mrs. Finnegan who worked tirelessly to teach us all stick skills, passing, and basic play-making. I particularly enjoyed being part of the team and working to achieve a common goal. However the bonding that we did as a team and the successes that we achieved because of the teamwork was what influenced me the most.
As I came to Bishop Eustace Prep as a freshman, I was excited and anxious. The skills that we had learned transferred immediately. My running skills and athletic abilities got me recognized and I became the only freshman on the varsity team. It was both exciting and challenging. Throughout the year watched the captains interact with the coaches and organize the team and involve all of the players including me. We enjoyed successes and I learned some valuable leadership lessons. Our sophomore year had lots of on the field accomplishments with a state title and defeating some nationally ranked teams. However what I was most proud of was that after the season I was named captain for the 2017 season as a junior. This opportunity recognized my contributions both on and off of the field and my relationships with the other players. Over the summer, I worked many hours with the coaches and other team members to plan for our summer camp, pick uniforms, organize team building events and conduct captains’ practices. I have always enjoyed to camaraderie of teams and working with all of the players to achieve common goals.
I look forward to continuing to build my leadership capabilities over this season and next as the skills will be something that will continue with me for a long period of time. I look forward to being a significant contributor to a completive collegiate team and building great relationships with many of my future players and coaches.
