My name is Qi'Moni Dangerfield-Montgomery, one of the lessons I have taken from obstacles that I have encountered that will be fundamental to my later success is the lesson of perseverance. Two years ago, I lost one of my closest friends and family members, my cousin, Antuan Hill Jr., who was shot in the head after defending himself in a fight. He was set to leave for college to play football in Kansas when he lost his life and did not get his chance to ball out as he had planned. He died 5 days before my birthday, and we had his funeral 5 days after. Celebrating my birthday is never easy because I lost two other family members in that same month that year. I fought with mental trauma, I felt sick to my stomach, went through a depressive stage, and did not speak much. I could not eat, and I lost a lot of sleep. I was in my head a lot but the one thing I could not get out of my head was how I could honor Antuan through something we both love doing; playing football. I thought about wearing his number because we both played for Fairfield High School and did a lot together. So, when I decided to transfer to Sycamore High School, one of the first things I asked the coach was if I could wear number six. It was a new beginning and I wanted to make the best of it. In my junior year, I got accepted into Scarlet Oaks Career School for automotive collision, I was making Antuan proud through football and my academic achievements. I pushed myself to become better, and I grew closer to my parents, my little brother, and my family overall, Antuan’s death opened my eyes to things as I got older, and it helped me more mature and to get my life together. I learned a lot from this experience, and it helped me figure out who I am as a person. It strengthened me mentally and now gives me confidence that I can push through anything. I will represent the number 6 and Antuan’s name everywhere I go, whether it is college football, working on cars, or anything else. Giving up is not an option! My life will serve as a testament to his memory. I chose this college because I feel it will help me achieve my future goals. I look forward to creating new memories in college and spreading my wings as a young man growing into a man. Everyone has a story to tell, here is a piece of mine.
Long Live Antuan Hill Jr.
