Personal Statement

When my family and I look back at photos of me growing up, I seem to always have a ball in my hands.  I would carry a ball wherever I went and would always want to be throwing, catching, kicking or shooting. It was a true omen to my future, as sports have been such a huge part of my life. I played many sports in my youth from soccer to hockey and volleyball.  I even wrestled for 7 years, making it to the PA State Tournament 6 years in a row.  I enjoyed all of them, but the two that have remained my passion and where I have truly excelled are football and basketball.  I started playing basketball when I was 5 and football when I was 6.  These sports have provided me with teammates who I consider my brothers and I love to go to battle with them on the field and on the court.  My passion for these sports have only grown throughout the years and I can’t imagine my life without them. I have known I wanted to play at the collegiate level for many years, but it’s something I truly see myself pursuing as that time draws nearer. I feel I not only have the talent, but also the strong work ethic and leadership skills necessary to succeed at the next level.  In addition, I excel in my academics.  I have a 4.19 GPA and am enrolled in AP, Honors, and Dual Enrollment classes.  Furthermore, I have been a golf caddie since I turned 14 and also run a successful pet-sitting business.

I attend a large 6A school in Pennsylvania with a graduating class of nearly 550 students.  I am currently ranked 38th in the class and am also Captain of both the Varsity Football and Basketball Teams as a junior.  Being elected Captain by my coaches and teammates in both sports is a true honor for me.  I feel my leadership and dedication to the sport as well my constant support of and close relationships with my teammates is what earned me this honor.  My teammates know they can count on me to be the first at practice and the one staying after to get in extra reps, watch more film, or shoot an extra 100 foul shots before leaving the gym.  I go above and beyond to lift and train for my position, attend camps and clinics, compete on AAU teams, work with QB coaches, and take QB courses to study defenses.

In terms of my success, as a sophomore starter on the varsity basketball team, we had an 18-4 record and I led the team in assists, steals, and rebounds.  My sophomore season as the JV QB we had a record of 6-2 and I threw for 26 touchdowns and ran for 2.  I did this while maintaining a GPA over 4.0 which earned me on the Gold Academic Team and named Scholar Athlete both seasons.  I have also earned the “Student of the Month” award nominated by teachers as a student who is always on “PAR” - Present, Accountable, and Respectful.  As my junior year is underway and off to an incredible start I am excited to continue to help my teams succeed while also pushing myself in the classroom.  Halfway into the football season I have already been nominated for PA Football Player of the Week 4 times and Go Erie Times Football Player of the Week twice.  I have also won “Player of the Game” several times for McDowell and was honored to be the Erie Lions Club Player of the Week.

My future goal is to play college football or basketball while earning a degree that will propel me into my future career.  Although I have not solidified a major, I am interested in Sports Management & Marketing, Athletic Administration, and also Physical Education, Coaching & Sport Science.  My ultimate goal is to coach at the collegiate level. I have been told numerous times from coaches throughout my years of playing sports that I have a very high basketball/football IQ.  I see the field and floor clearly and instinctively draw up plays and read defenses. I am always talking strategy with my coaches and telling them what I see while playing and watching films.  I would love to combine this knowledge and innate tendency I have with my competitive drive, demand for hard work, and also my caring and compassionate nature towards others to be able to make a successful career out of coaching.
