August of 2021 was a bad month. I found myself off my High School football team after working extremely hard going into my junior year to secure a starting spot. I was a half a credit short from actually being a junior and was deemed ineligible for that season. The first semester of my junior year was horrible. I blamed everyone but myself for me not being able to play. I went to a very dark place as I realized that my lifelong dream of playing college football was coming to an end. Things got even worse the second semester as my guidance counselor told me there was "no path for me to graduate" from that school. I was mad, hurt and frustrated. I didn't understand why this was happening to me after all of the effort I had put into this sport and into that program specifically. It just didn't seem fair. Luckily for me, my parents never gave up on me or my dream. They wouldn't take that counselor's advice to move me to a different diploma path. They believed in me when nobody else, including myself, did. They found a school that was more in tune with my learning style and enrolled me at Fusion academy in March of 2022. The new school is great. It is a 1-1 teacher to student ratio so I'm able to concentrate on mastering the subjects before moving on to the next. I was making great strides at the new school but was still unhappy. Fusion doesn't have athletic programs and I found myself missing my beloved sport as Spring practices began. I mentioned this to my new counselor and she went to work with my parents to find a solution. We were able to find a program at Zion Christian that would let me compete as a homeschool student. It was an added benefit that I had several friends on the team that had been recruiting me to come there for years. I worked extremely hard this past summer to get my credits back. From March until August I was able to recover 9 credits! I sacrificed time with friends, vacation and even sleep, all to be able to compete in my senior season. This season has been the most fun I have ever had playing football. The highlight being able to help lead Zion back to the playoffs for the first time since 2010! This season has reignited my passion for this sport and made me even more determined to realize my dream of playing college football! This experience has made me a better person, a better teammate, a better athlete and a better student. I am now able to realize that the consequences that led me to this point are ultimately due to choices that I made. I guess it took almost losing football forever to refocus me. The program that selects me to play for them will get an extremely focused, determined and humbled athlete.
