Miles Lafferty Personal statement
My name is Miles Lafferty and I go to Silas High School (formerly Woodrow Wilson High School) in Tacoma Washington. I’m currently enrolled in Tacoma Community College Running Start program. I am working towards getting an Associate Degree in medicine or biology and for now am focusing on the sciences. I currently have a 3.79 GPA for spring quarter 2021 and have earned 45 college credits. My senior year, I will also be taking Spanish 3/4 at Silas High. Covid has been an interesting process when it comes to school, but I feel as if I was able to take a tough situation and adapt. In fact, if anything, it allowed me to balance my time better with work, school and my social life.
As a player I am maneuverable. You need me somewhere I can be there. I learn quickly, so if it’s a snap decision, I’ll be there and I’m dependable. At this moment in time, I currently play WR/RB on offense and a safety middle linebacker hybrid on defense. For 2020/2021, I was fortunate enough to earn the award of 2nd Team All-League DB, which was a selection from coaches around the league.
When it comes to training and perseverance, I believe that’s what I’m best at. Hard, consistent work is one of the most difficult things for players to maintain. It takes a different type of mental strength then most could imagine. In fact, to me, it might be one of the most important. Having the ability to get knocked over and get right back up and act like it never happened is key. To me training isn’t just physical but mental as well. During my Junior year, I also joined Ford Sports Performance (FSP) 7v7, which is located in Bellevue and drove 2 hours, with over 40 miles each way, to participate 3 times a week in order to up my game. There were also travel tournaments and combines that were required all while I was training for High School ball and holding a part time job at my neighborhood Dairy Queen, which I’ve held for the past year and a half.
I have played many sports such as baseball, track, soccer, wrestling, and have enjoyed all of them for multiple reasons, but I always come back to football. The energy the players and the coaches have are unlike any other sport. The relationship I share with my coaches as well as with my fellow players, is the reason I love the sport. The coaches are more than just coaches, they are role models and influencers in my life. Some of favorite coaches were (FSP) 7v7. One of my coaches picked a play, designed for me to run, which was an option route when we were 3rd and 1 to the endzone. I ran the route and we scored, and I jogged off the field expecting to celebrate, and I don’t think I’ve ever been yelled at worse in my life. He very clearly, told me I could have ran it better and didn’t even care that I had scored. We won that game by 1 touchdown, and I was never really upset about what he said to me. If anything, I appreciated the message he was sending. The message was that he expected better and knew I could be better. That lesson has stuck with me since then.
I’ve had some great opportunities to do some showcase camps this summer and am excited for the next chapter.
The showcases I’ve attended so far are:
June 13th - Junior day football at Rainier Beach, Seattle afternoon session
July 8th - University of Pennsylvania - 8:30am to 3:30pm
July 9th - Columbia University - 9:15am to 1:30pm
July 10th - Princeton University - 3pm to 5pmJuly 12th - Brown University - 6pm to 9pm
July 20th - College Coaches Showcase Camp (CCSC) at Rainier Beach, Seattle for both Offensive and Defensive sessions - 7:15am to 3pm
I’m looking for the next place I can call home, connect with coaches and team and have the opportunity to get a great education. A support system, where win or lose, (hopefully winning) we work together to achieve success.
You can check out my information below and I look forward to connecting with you.
