Hi Coaches,
My name is Dexter Varrelmann. I am a 2017 Graduate at The Athenian School, which is a highly competitive college preparatory school, in Danville, California. Ever since I can remember I have loved anything to do with sports. Sports are my strength and are my passion. I am a natural athlete with a great brain for spatial awareness on a court or field. You’d think with these talents that I always had it easy making all-stars, or batting in the top of the line-up, or always being on the starting team. I always thought I should be, but that was not always the case. I grew up with great athletes in my town and I was always the smallest kid on the court. I fought on every team from the bottom to the top, from the bench to the starting line-up. Each team challenged me and I loved the fight. It drove me to show them my talent and I learned how to work hard, in fact work harder. I learned how to dig deep and prove myself. I have had to face similar challenges in my academics as well. I always knew that I was intelligent; it just did not come through during testing or memorization. I was an innovative thinker and when being placed in a highly academic school such as Athenian I wondered why I was behind other kids in some classes. At the end of my sophomore year I was diagnosed with Stealth Dyslexia. I had to become my own advocate and had to get the teachers to understand me and specifically how I learn. Then due to hard work my grades have continued to improve each year.
This year on my High School Basketball Team I played both Point Guard and Shooting Guard. My stats were 52% on 2-point shots, 37% on 3 pointers making 77 for the season and shot 73% from the line. I had 28 steals and 22 deflections while grabbing 54 rebounds. During the season I was one of the team Captains and the leader of our team. For post-season honors I made 2nd Team All League in my first year as a starter on the Varsity and was the third highest scorer in the League.
