Hi my name is Xavier Owens and I am a 15 year-old 6’5” forward. I am currently in my sophomore year of high school at Charles G. Finney School, graduating class of 2026, with a GPA of 3.4. I want to major in Engineering in college.
To tell a little bit more about myself, I was born in Baltimore, MD and moved to Rochester, NY, during the pandemic. My family and I are moving to Sacramento, California in June 2024. My parents have really good job opportunities there, my mom as a doctor and my dad in tech. I’m excited to be closer to my older sister who goes to grad school at CalStateLA.
I feel as though I embody the characteristics of a true student-athlete. In addition to practicing with my sports team, I study at least 2 hours a night and play year round travel baseball. My favorite classes are Trigonometry and Spanish.
I am very fortunate to have two parents who attended college, my dad attended UMBC and my mother was a 2 sport student-athlete at Johns Hopkins University. Both of whom give me tips on managing a rigorous academic and athletic schedule. In addition to basketball and travel baseball, I play Varsity soccer and Varsity baseball for my high school. I have 3 siblings, the younger ones are 11 and 6, they also attend my school.
Over the summer, I attended RIT Advanced RoboCamp using real world sensors and motors to program my Mbot; GenCyber Camp at Rochester Institute of Technology learning Python coding used in cybersecurity and completed a 6 week Kaplan ACT Prep online course.
In regards to athletics, I was able to gain strength through adversity during my freshman basketball season. I fractured my left wrist in 2 places, mid Varsity basketball season during a game. However, during the 5 weeks in a cast, I was able to improve my strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance through calisthenics and plyometrics. In fact, I was able to come back for the last regular season game, days after my cast was removed, scoring 11 points in 16 minutes!
Currently, my varsity basketball season has been going well so far, I’m playing Center and working on my guard skills in the game situation whenever I can. My season high so far was on December 15th against our rivals Northstar and I was the leading scorer with 28 points.
Over the summer, I was fortunate to attend University of Kansas basketball camp, the Phenom America Invitational Basketball Camp in Anaheim and Point Guard College (PGC) in Boston. Although I am mostly a two-sport student-athlete playing centerfielder on my travel baseball team; this past fall, I played center mid defender for my high school Varsity soccer team and made 2nd team all Private Parochial.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my email.
Sincerely,
Xavier Owens
