Since the first time I played travel basketball in 4th grade, my father has taught me that “basketball is a microcosm of the real world and the best way to prepare me.” He put me in travel at a young age because he wanted me to have to “try out,” to see that there is high-level competition, to have to work for it. He wanted me to fail periodically, so I could learn how to respond. What has basketball taught me? •Success must be earned. You can have all the talent in the world, but without hard work, you can't excel. Life is competitive. I am not the only one who wants the job. I can't take it for granted and must strive to continuously improve in order to stay ahead of the competition. •Hard work does not guarantee success, but you can't have success without it. •Not every job is for everyone. I can dream to be an NBA big man, but I was not gifted with that height. The secret is to find where you can best utilize your talents and attributes. Improve what you can control, but do not get hung up on what you can't. •Teamwork beats selfishness every time. I learned to build up those around me, so we can advance together. As my team grows, I grow. •Integrity is essential for team and personal growth. •Like life, basketball is not fair. I make mistakes that affect my teammates’ success; they make mistakes that affect mine; and officials make mistakes. I have learned that I have to play the hand I am dealt without wasting time and energy, blaming others or “luck.” This attitude toward basketball has prepared me to be an asset to any team I am on. I will bring that attitude to a college team and will try to be an asset to the university. I do not view my college choice as: “What will it do for me?" but "what can we can do together?"
