Personal Statement

My name is Alex Swinnerton and I love the game of golf! I’m a grade 11 student at Centennial Collegiate in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  My goals are to obtain a post secondary education and continue to develop as a highly competitive athlete.  I would be a great candidate for any golf team because I’m an extremely hard worker, competent leader and always a team player.  I have a great work ethic with a desire to improve each day, whether that is at golf, school or just as a person.  By understanding the importance of hard work, extra effort and perseverance, I have experienced positive results.  As shown by winning the U15 and U17 Golf Provincial Championship and Order of Merit for Saskatchewan in back to back years, as well as being a 6 time winner on the MJT and Golf Saskatchewan circuit.

I am a multisport athlete who plays hockey and basketball. In playing other sports it has helped me become a more competitive golfer. Playing other sports has helped me gain mental strength by learning what it takes to be successful through victory and defeat.  As much as I enjoy playing all those sports, my priority is golf. I have been told many times by my coaches and teammates that I am a natural leader. As a leader it is essential to be able to motivate my teammates but more importantly it is to always lead by example.  A consistent message I have received from coaches over the years, in all sports, is that I am an extremely coachable athlete. I feel there is always more to learn and I appreciate all my coaches for their efforts to assist in my development as a player and a person.

I have been involved in sports since I was young and I am extremely proud of my achievements to this point.  Some of my highlighted accomplishments are included in my profile which I trust will be appealing. I look forward to the opportunity to take my golf to the next level.

  • Par / Yardage / Slope / Rating: 70 / 5,940 / 120 / 68.2 - DEFENDING CHAMPION - Single Qualifying round and four rounds of match play. - I shot an qualifying round of 75. This placed me in the Championship flight. I won my first match play 3 & 2. I played and managed the course well. Day 2 of match play was an intense battle. I went up early by 2 , down to 1 up by hole 10 and it remained that way right to 18. At that point I was 5 under par and my competitor was 3 under. It was shot for shot and putt for putt. I leaked my drive on 18 and lost a ball. I ended up losing that hole and we played two playoff holes in which I lost on a great putt by my competitor. It's too bad that one of us had to lose but that's why match play is so fun. The energy and intensity of match play is so exciting. • 8/09/21 to 8/12/21
  • Par / Yardage / Slope / Rating: 72 / 7,056 / 139 / 74.8 - This tournament didn't start out how I had hoped. I got behind early and day 1 ended up being my worst competitive round of golf in a couple of years. However, that's not to say I didn't play well. I just missed on a few shots and didn't have luck on my side. instead of the ball bouncing right towards the green it jumped left. My misses were small but they caused me some difficult recoveries. Day 2 I played better but again, I was playing catch up and looking to make some stokes up on the field. Overall, a great experience to play a high level event and I look forward to qualifying next year. I don't feel the moment was overwhelming, it was just simply not my week and I didn't perform to the level I needed to. Over the week I had a few of missed putts that just lipped out on greens that had a lot of movement and varying speeds due to the wet conditions. These all cost me some valuable strokes but even with those mishaps I still had a chance to finish top 5 or better. Coming off the course on Day 3, I was initially disappointed in my result but after having a few days to reflect, review my play each day and how my fellow competitors faired, I'm pleased but definitely not satisfied. At the end of the day, that's golf and it's what I love about the game as it always provides new challenges. Overall, the course was tough but fair even under some really wet conditions and it was one of the nicest courses I've ever had the pleasure to play. I enjoyed the experience and can't wait for the next opportunity. It's unfortunate that Golf Canada cancelled all their National Championships this year as I qualified by winning U17 Provincials in July and was really looking forward to competing in it

I played really well on qualifying day shooting a personal best score of 68 to capture the Low Qualifier Award by 4 strokes. On day 1 of Match Play I was able to win 4 and 3. Day 2 is cut day and was a great match against another top-level Saskatchewan player. I was down 3 after 5 holes and worked my way back to win on the final putt on 18. Day 3 I won 4 and 3. Day 4, the final round, was a great match. I again came back from 2 down after 6 holes to win the Championship 3 and 2. It was a great week of golf and one of my prouder moments to win real tough tournament on my home course.

This was not my best showing. My nerves showed in this event and I was tired coming off of 5 tournaments in 4 weeks. However, no excuses, I did not play well, and it showed on the scorecard and the standings, finishing middle of the pack. This was a great learning experience on how to take care of my body and game during a busy schedule.

A great week of golf. Wind was up on day 1 which made the round difficult (60km gust with 35 kms winds) but ended day 1 with a 5 over 77 and good for 6th place overall. Great day of golf on day 2 with a 1 over 73 and good for being tied for 3rd overall. Day 3 was another good day for golf. Finished 2 over, 74 finishing solo 3rd overall (ages 16-19) behind the two top 19-year-old juniors in the province. I won the U17 Championship by 3 strokes. Very happy with the week considering my finish the week prior.

After round one I was tied for first place at even par. Unfortunately, day 2 was not my best round. I struggled all day to get going. I had some unlucky bounces and some missed opportunities. No excuses though. I needed to be better and be more consistent for the entire tournament.

Day one brought some of the strongest winds/gusts that I can recall playing in and as a result it wasn’t my best effort. I had my worst back 9 (9 over) that I’ve had in a long time and ended up shooting 11 over, 82 and landed in 19th place. I regrouped and day two brought more winds but not nearly as strong as day 1. I was able to turn in a 1 over, 72 and moved up 16 places to finish tied for 3rd. Alberta has some strong players and I was really pleased with how I bounced back and climbed the leaderboard.

Day 2 started out with strong winds/gusts and heavy rain for the first 6 holes. The rain disappeared but the winds remained. I was able to shoot a 2 over with an eagle on 18 and jumped into 2nd place. Overall, I was happy with the weekend. I felt I played well vs the conditions and a couple of missed shots made the difference.
