Personal Statement

My name is Cody Bailow and I am a left defenseman, although I can play both sides of the ice,  I will be playing for the Boston Jr Rangers in the EHLP for the upcoming 23-24 season.   I am a multi-sport athlete currently also playing  Travel Lacrosse and have also played such sports as baseball, flag football and competitive archery. When people ask me what I love about playing hockey it's not hard to say EVERYTHING! I just don't want to play hockey I NEED to play hockey. I started playing at the age of 7.  Never being in a ice rink before then I knew that it was going to take hard work and dedication every day to achieve all the goals I set for myself. I started on a house league and have worked very hard every season since to move up a competitive level every year reaching my goal of playing  Junior hockey at 16 years old.My next ultimate goal is to play collegiate hockey  while continuing my education in a sports related field like Sports Medicine or Athletic Trainer.  Not only do I strive to do my best on the ice I strive to give my all in the classroom as well maintaining a 3.7-4.0 GPA since grade school. Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit my page.

Townshend Skating Systems Review 2020

Hello Cody,

I wanted to preface this evaluation by speaking to your character from an outside coaching prospective. I described you to my fellow staff as being one of the most resilient campers I have ever coached. I said it, you did it, no questions asked and you did it with a smile on your face.

Your strengths on the ice are most definitely your stride length and power. You have solid habits with stuck handling (hands pushed out away from your body), but you should continue to work on making them more smooth. This will increase your confidence moving with the puck so you do not slow down while you have it in your possession.

Your speed has most definitely increased over the course of this week as well and was extremely noticeable during our resistance training on Wednesday. Make sure that you continue to work on your first three steps while taking off to continue your growth as a powerful skater. You can do this by doing sprints both short and long distance and make sure you put a huge focus on your starts (first three steps).

Your off ice conditioning considering the current circumstances would be rated at a “B” to my standards. This means you are well above the average in terms of both strength and stamina, but there is still work to be done. Shoot pucks and do body weight workouts during quarantine to continue your progress.

Again Cody, you were an absolute pleasure to have here at camp and I truly look forward to having you back to keep building on the progress you have made this week. You should be very proud of your effort and accomplishments.

Good luck this season and see you next summer!!!

Townshend Hockey Skating System Review 2021:

Cody, it was a pleasure as always having you at camp. You bring the two most important qualities coaches are looking for, hard work and coach-ability. You have an eagerness to learn and improve and it shows tremendously. You are a whole new player every summer we get to work with you. You have tons of potential and we are all excited to see your future success. Your skating and puck skills are really coming along. Your technique is better than some pros we have worked with. We would just like to see you implement more power and speed to those qualities. You are at that level now where you can start taking everything up a notch, kind of like we did in our skating group, by adding pucks and intensity. I would really like to see you relax your upper body a bit more as you tend to be too rigid and it can effect your puck skills. Relaxing your elbows and training with pucks to help with multitasking should really help. I also like to see players work on their creativity and flow of the game by playing informal games at pick up or pond hockey. It’s a fun and easy way to learn those intangibles that don’t always present themselves in rigid practice or season games. We would like to see you work on having quicker feet. This came be accomplished on the ice with some of the drills we did but mostly off ice with agility ladder. Off the ice you are very mature and respectful, but I would like to see you try being a leader little more. It is something coaches notice and appreciate and can help you on and off the ice in a lot of ways.

Keep working on the drills we worked on, especially the D Skating stuff as that needs to be executed without though while playing. It should be second nature which takes a lot of reps. Most defenseman have no idea how to implement the skills we are showing you. Only the top NHL defenseman really utilize these techniques at a high level. Once you master these, you will have a huge advantage over your competition.

Good luck this season and I look forward to seeing your progression next summer!

Coach Seth Goodson
