Personal Statement
My name is Michael Foglia. I am 18 years old and I am currently in my Junior year of high school at Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, Vermont. I take advanced placement courses, and I have steadily carried a 4.0 GPA ever since I could remember. I am a member of the National Honors Society. As a hobby, I play trumpet in our school’s Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band. Playing the trumpet allows me to escape from the everyday stresses that come with life.
Playing hockey is my greatest passion. Ever since I put on my first pair of skates, and held my first hockey stick; I knew I had found my first love. I am currently a goaltender, and have been playing AAA hockey for the past seven years. Last year, I had the honor of being one of the netminders for the Rice Memorial Prep hockey team. We had a great year, we played in top tier tournaments, and competed against many of the top teams in North America.
Like most goaltenders, I started off playing as a forward, but once I strapped on the pads for the first time, I immediately fell in love with the position. As a goalie, I constantly want to better myself. I put a great emphasis on my skating and foot work. I train with the likes of Bob Janosz, Martin Biron, Nick Vilardo and Dave Leggio. Not only do I strengthen myself physically, but I am dedicated to improving myself mentally. I do so by reading books about the mind and I frequently participate in mindset training, with Pete Fry, a world renowned mindset training coach. I'm finding in all of this hard work that ultimately, it makes the game more fun.
