Personal Statement
Hockey is not just a sport to me; it is my friends, it is my goals, it is my family, and it has made
me who I am today. From learn to skate at four years old to high school final four
championships I have been exposed to countless opportunities. As an athlete I learned that not
only are we exposed to opportunities, but also hardships. Sometimes our goals are not ones that
we are able to achieve. Learning to overcome the disappointment that comes from this is
definitely the greatest strength I have learned from growing up in hockey.
Determination and refusal to give up are not only characteristics that I apply to goals on the ice,
but off the ice as well. After deciding not to play AAA, I was ready to join my high school team
but suffered an upsetting injury at the end of the preseason. Instead of joining my team on the ice I
was forced to watch from the bench for the majority of my season. I decided then and there this
would not be the end of my season, I set new goals and worked hard to ensure I was back on the
ice as soon as possible. Because of my determination I pushed myself harder than ever, rejoining
my team as a starter for the rest of the season. I have learned to never let myself stay down or
upset about a situation; I now channel a hardship into goals that not only make me a better leader
and hockey player, but also a harder working student and a better person overall.
