My name is Grant Fletcher. I am a 6’3” 175 lbs sophomore at McKinney Christian Academy, a college preparatory school in McKinney, Texas.
Currently I play for the Dallas Stars Elite, the only AAA hockey program in the State of Texas. I am a right handed defenseman, but play both right and left defense. Five out of the past eight seasons I have served as a captain or assistant captain for my teams. I was honored to be selected to participate in the Rocky Mountain District Player Development Camp in 2016.
My goal is to play college hockey. I understand that in order to do this, I not only have to excel in the sport, but also excel in my studies. I currently have a 3.3 GPA and have developed a study plan to increase those scores. Although I have not decided on my college major, I have a strong interest in sports medicine and physical therapy.
My faith is an important part of my life. It has taught me discipline, respect and gratitude – principles which also apply to my hockey career.
Discipline. I am a disciplined hockey player and a hard worker both on and off the ice. Throughout my hockey career my coaches have described me as an “extremely coachable” player. During the 2015-2016 season, my coach awarded me the 212˚ award. Water doesn’t boil at 211˚- it takes that one extra degree and that extra degree makes all of the difference. This award recognized the one player that consistently provided the extra work and effort to make a noticeable difference.
Respect. In addition to loving the game, I respect hockey as a sport. I respect the level of athleticism and skill it takes to play at a high level. I not only work hard on the ice to improve my skills, but I also work hard off the ice to improve my understanding of the game. I study hockey. I watch games to learn from other players – to learn from their approach, their positioning and their strategy. Every coach I have played for has complimented me on my hockey IQ. They have stated that some of my biggest strengths are my understanding of the game, the ability to see the ice and make the smart play.
Gratitude. I am so grateful to be able to play hockey. I am at my happiest when I am on the ice – whether it’s practice or a game. I cannot believe all of the places I have traveled to and all of the things I have seen. Not many people my age get the chance to have these kind of experiences. I am very thankful to be able to play this sport.
When I am not playing hockey, I love to be at the lake. I enjoy wakeboarding, skiing, fishing and just being outdoors. Community service has also been a significant part of my life. I have been on mission trips to South Texas, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and The Dominican Republic. I have also volunteered at the National Veteran Wheelchair Games, Meals on Wheels, Vacation Bible Schools and a variety of hockey camps and practices for youth hockey in Dallas.
