Personal Statement
When I was younger my parents signed me up for what seemed like every local sport: football, soccer, baseball, swimming, and even Taekwondo. While they were fun I didn’t really love playing. My friends were all playing lacrosse and I decided to try it even though I didn’t know much about the sport. I quickly realized I loved it and loved playing with my friends. And when my coach threw me in goal half way through the season I knew I loved being in goal, saving shots, and proving to the team they could rely on me! After my first season of lacrosse was over I realized this is where I wanted to focus and dedicated myself to improving as a goalie. I still try new sports like squash as it is fun to learn new things and they help me to stay in shape for the upcoming lacrosse seasons. What’s interesting is being a lacrosse goalie teaches you to how to continue working hard all the time because the game isn’t over until the final bell sounds and the team just needs you to never give up. I make everything a competition to push myself harder so I am able to continue to become a better goalie. I have played for a lot of coaches with very different styles of play. This was critical to my personal development as a player but also as a student. As an athlete I have improved each year with my save percentage, clears, passing, and communication while adapting to each new coach and team. As a student this has taught me to figure out a plan for attacking each new class because not every class is interesting or fun. I think one of my more unique characteristics is that I know now that I will persevere through anything regardless of the amount of work or obstacles in front of me. While I am formally diagnosed with ADHD as a learning disability and was not required to take a language course, I completed two years of Latin with a B average and my teacher noted my hard work and dedication to putting in extra time as the key to my success. I know now I can apply this to anything.
