Christopher Chavarria '15 Recruiting Profile

As long as I can remember, I have always approached my education with the knowledge and expectation that I would be college-bound.  Since entering High School, I began to formulate a game plan and set my longer term goals with a law degree in mind.  I would ultimately like to gain experience as a lawyer by entering the military as a “JAG” Officer.  I developed an interest in pursuing a career as a lawyer after lengthy conversations with two of my uncles who have uniquely different experiences as lawyers.  I realized that a legal profession suits my personality.  The military option was an attractive option that was recommended to me by my father (formerly a Naval Investigative Agent) and several family members who had spent careers in the various military services.  As part of the long-term goal of acquiring my law degree, I have determined that a good foundation would entail an undergraduate degree in either Business, International Studies, Environmental Studies or History.  I have an interest in all of these subjects and have learned from my own research that the above undergraduate majors would serve me well in this regard. 

I believe that I possess sufficient desire and ability to achieve my goals as evidenced by the fact that I have been consistent in my academic performance.  I have achieved excellent grades since elementary school and I attribute this to having established good study habits at an early age.  I also attribute my success in school to the outstanding support I have received from my family.  I am committed to succeeding and accomplishing my goals – both in and out of school.

As far as my soccer background and aspirations, I have enjoyed the game since early childhood.  Having grown up in Costa Rica and Guadalajara, Mexico, I was drawn to soccer, the national sport for Latin America.  I have played every year since starting and began playing competitively after moving to San Diego, CA in the summer of 2009.  I have consistently played with “Albion” where I am currently playing under club coach Keith Miller (619-813-6037; [email protected]).  Coach Miller has selected me as one of the team captains, a responsibility I take very seriously.  Playing soccer has taught me that athletes are leaders, both on and off of the field.  It is a responsibility that entails leadership through example.  It is a quality and trait that I seek to always perfect in all aspects of my life and it has served me well on the field and in the classroom.  Even before officially being selected as one of our team’s captains, I was regarded as one of the unofficial captains of the team due to my ability to inspire the team to play to its fullest ability, despite our likelihood of winning or losing.  Part of being a leader requires one to be ready to follow and support the team as necessary.  I consider myself a team player, willing to take criticism, direction and guidance from others, especially coaching staff.  I am competitive by nature but am very sensitive to following established rules.  I am disciplined and am willing to sacrifice time and energy towards accomplishing my goals, the teams’ goals and those of my leaders.
