Personal Statement

I am a Spanish (Madrid) student-athlete, living in the UAE, competing Internationally & in the UAE - have enjoyed playing from the age of 3.
I aim to play for a D1 or D3 NCAA institution, with a strong focus in academics too. As a versatile player with International experience at the highest levels, I believe that I can be incorporate into teams with various cultures, styles of play and even languages (I can speak 4 languages & have lived in Spain, England, South Africa, UAE!). 
I truly enjoy the Outside Back position on either side, helping shape the defense and get attacking teams away from the center, but also developing rapid attacks. However, I have also previously played Centre Back and Centre Midfielder.
With a 5.0 GPA, I am 'within the top ten students in my year group' (Headmaster's commendation letter), an will be taking the SAT soon! Furthermore, in school I enjoy challenging myself with the most difficult courses and also run various societies to push learning of Economics and Engineering beyond the curriculum, and also run a social startup called SportsUnite (more details on my LinkedIn page: www.linkedin.com/in/christian-ruiz-422-a2229).

  • After winning the highly competitive U16 UAE Qualifiers in November 2022, we progressed to the finals of the 2023 International competition. We were able to compete against teams of the highest calibre, including Southampton FC (England) and Lee Man FC (Hong Kong). We drew, 1-1, against Southampton FC in the Group Stages but were ultimately defeated, by the same team, in the finals. Although we placed second, I believe it was a great learning experience and a memorable, competitive tournament.

  • Travelling to Spain, as a team, we competed in the Oviedo Cup "Cadete Sub 16" (U16) cup, which included top-tier teams such as Atletico Madrid, CA Osasuna, Real Valladolid, Real Oviedo, Real Sporting and SD Eibar. It was a very memorable competition where we were able to compete at the highest level, facing a range of Spanish teams, developing as a team as we exposed ourselves to the high-level competition. I played as an Outside Back and Centre Back, clashing with large teams such as Atletico Madrid and Marcet Academy in the group stage, and facing other highly regarded teams in the knockout stages. Regardless of their prominence, we competed until the end, achieving quite impressive results.

  • Competing against other academies, at the U18 level (2 years older), we managed to win the local league (First Place). This was owing to our consistent work, effort and collaboration, throughout the year.

  • I am excited to demonstrate my abilities and skills on the field, in front of college coaches against top-level athletes in the US, at Harvard's clinic. This is a college ID clinic designed to expose strong soccer players to college coaches and the college training environment. Along with the Harvard Men’s Soccer staff, there will be 6-8 other College and University programs in attendance.

Yes. In the first set for mathematics at my school, we have been covering the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (British Curriculum) course at a faster pace and going into further depth. Furthermore, we have also been studying the AQA Further Mathematics GCSE Certificate, going through more advanced content, such as higher-level Calculus, Probabilities (permutations, combinations), Geometry and Matrices (including transformations). This further mathematics qualification places an emphasis on higher order technical proficiency, rigorous argument and problem solving skills.
