I have played soccer for 7 years and I have always been a goalkeeper. It is, and always has been, a natural position for me. I have progressed through my soccer experience playing first at the town level. I then played at the town travel and club levels. I now play at the high school and club levels. I also earned a place on the Massachusetts Olympic Development Program’s Goalkeeper Academy for multiple years. I captained my high school’s J/V team to an undefeated season. My high school’s varsity team never lost a game last season when I played and, next season, I will be one of the captains of my high school’s varsity team.
As a goalkeeper, I am in a unique position and have to be able to read the entire game. To be effective, I need to take ownership of my area and manage my defense. I need to be able to quickly assess the situation and make critical calls – do I call on my defense, stay on the line, or come out and commit to challenging the oncoming player? The slightest mistake could give away a goal or a penalty.
While the goalkeeper is a unique position on the field, soccer is very much a team sport and the team wins or loses together. I thrive on that aspect of teamwork and love the camaraderie. Soccer, and particularly being a goalkeeper, has helped me to mature, grow and develop as a leader. I enjoy leading and I enjoy pushing myself and competing. I have worked with multiple goalkeeper coaches and strive to hone my skills at every opportunity.
Consistent with my drive to constantly improve as a goalkeeper, I attend an academically rigorous school where I push to maintain high standards. This again is an environment in which I thrive. My classmates and I work together, help each other and strive to lift each other up at every opportunity. I strongly believe that the attributes that make a person a good teammate and a good classmate also make that person a good person. I am also an award winning debater which, interestingly, has helped to develop my communication skills on the soccer field.
I am looking for a challenging academic program and a competitive athletic environment. I am excited for what my future holds.
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
