My name is Anwar Monroy and soccer has always been my passion! I started playing soccer when I was 3 years old in Galveston, TX. Then my family and I moved to El Paso, where I met my coach Guillermo "Memo" McFarland, who taught me the roots of this beautiful game. The game of soccer has taught me the importance of having respect, punctuality and many other important skills that are necessary in any aspect of life, with things as simple as attending a meeting on time because every person's time is very valuable. Soccer has taught me that discipline can be stronger than talent, "Hard work beats talent, when talent does not work hard."
When I start playing, my mind gets transported to a sanctuary, I forget about everything and feel free and joyful to be on the field and have another chance to do what I love. This is why I dedicate many hours of my day training and give all my effort in every single game. I like to take care of my body by maintaining a good diet, having recovery sessions, and respecting my sleep schedule before my games. I do not like to waste any day without training even if I do not have a team session, I do this knowing it’s the only way to improve my game And become a better player.
I am a very social person, which has helped me feel confident around my teammates and have good chemistry with them. I like to help my teammates in any aspect, and get to know them in order to create strong relationships that will help build a powerful team.
I made it for my elementary school team from 3rd to 6th grade in St. Matthews Catholic School. I won two “MVP trophies” and two “most offensive player” trophies. Then I went to Hornedo Middle School and in my 7th grade year, I received the MVP award trophy. I continued playing in Coronado High School where I was on the Varsity team during my freshman and sophomore year, scoring many goals and assists.
On the academic side, I have been in the A Honor Roll during all my school years. I enjoy learning new things in class, through experiments and projects. I love mathematics and science, which has caught my attention in careers such as sports medicine and/or sports administration/business.
In 2020, I started playing for the El Paso Locomotive Academy 2007 category, where we won several tournaments, including Texas Super Cup in Dallas, TX, Alianza Nationals in 2022, Arsenal Challenge in Phoenix, AZ, and other tournaments where I scored several goals, assists, and took part of being a key player for my team. I had the great opportunity to attend the i2i soccer camp in Northumbria University during the summer of 2023 in Newcastle England. It was a fantastic and high level soccer experience, where I got great learning and training experience from many coaches who were once Premier League players. I learned and grew a lot from this experience and I had the chance to score the winning goal against a local undefeated academy. I now have a spot on their soccer team if I choose to go to Northumbria University.
Now, I am part the U20 El Paso Locomotives USL Academy. I am thrilled to continue my journey at a high soccer level in college and eager to improve in any aspect of the game. I am willing to dedicate my time and effort in order to achieve these goals, hoping to be granted an opportunity to be part of college soccer team to continue fulfilling my dream.
