I have been raised as a student-athlete for as long as I can remember. I can recall stepping out onto the field for the first time as a Virginia Beach White Tiger when I was two years old. Following that time were many years at Smithfield Park and Recreation, Smithfield Soccer Club, and eventually becoming a Duke at Windsor High School. Throughout my many years in the sport, I have found a passion and love for the game that parallels no other. No matter the time or place, I am always involved in the sport. Even when I am not actively participating in drills with my team, practicing on my own, or serving as a referee for younger players, and watch and study professional games and note their tactics. I enjoy watching great players such as Sergio Ramos and Carles Puyol and try to mimic the art of their techniques. Even with all this involvement in the sport, I have never felt my passion for it quaver, and I believe that it never will.
There are many attributes that I hold that allow me to stand out from other soccer players. The trait that has been the biggest asset to me throughout my many years is that I am coachable, both in and out of the classroom. I constantly reflect on my performance, whether after a game, practice, test, or presentation. I am always open to learn how to become better at anything that I do. I have never thought that I have reached the maximum level in any aspect of my life. Along with this trait, I am also proud to be a strong leader and decision maker. On the field I don’t just take charge, I assist my teammates by leading by example. I am also vocal on the field, but not to the point that I am considered bossy or irritating. Many of my teammates see me as a strong leader from the back.
My career as a Windsor High School Duke began as an eighth grader. In 2013 I was a starter on the Junior Varity team, and moved up to a starting position at the Varsity level my freshman year. For the first half of my freshman year, I was a forward and was able to score several goals for my team. However, my coach felt the team needed an experienced player and leader in the back field. During this time is where I found my niche, center back. At the end of the season I was named First Team All-Conference and First Team All-District as a defender.
Soccer has always been my main focus and priority, however, I also have experience playing football. In 2012, I played Pop Warner football in Suffolk, Virginia and quickly came to enjoy the strategy, along with the mental and physical toughness that comes with the sport. In 2013, I was awarded the USS Bainbridge Classroom Warrior Scholarship. That year, I was also named a Second Team Pop Warner All-American Scholar, which recognizes the top 2% of all Pop Warner participants nationwide. The following year, as an eighth grader, I was a starter on the Junior Varsity Football Team for Windsor High School. I continued on to start at the Varsity level my freshman year. However, by the end of my sophomore year, despite my success in the sport and being named Second Team All-Conference Punter, I came to the decision that I would like to focus primarily on soccer. I will always carry with me the important life lessons of teamwork, hard-work, and dedication that I learned while playing football.
Off the field I am a strong student and have always seen academics as a very important key to understanding the world around me. I am an advanced student with a Grade Point Average of 4.272. However, I feel that school is much more than a Grade Point Average. I hold great value to the concept of learning and knowledge. I also help my fellow classmates when I can and try my best to pass my knowledge onto them. To me, learning is both fun and exciting. I don’t just attend school because I have to, I see school as an opportunity to better myself and live a richer and fuller life.
I am also involved in supporting my neighbors and the community. I serve as a member in Windsor High School’s National Beta program. This program organizes fundraisers for the school and assists in making the school environment better through various repainting and cleaning projects. We also participate in the community by putting wreaths on gravesites during the holidays and participating in awareness events such as the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics and the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. I am also involved in lending a hand at the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia by wrapping and packaging food for people who need it. These community services allow me to serve others and give back to a community that has been a privilege for me to grow in. I am proud of where I come from and I will always hold this town dear to my heart.
Overall, I am a successful student, athlete, and volunteer in my community. I try my best to lead by example and help guide others. I love the game of soccer and constantly strive to learn more about the game and improve my skill. I am very driven and dedicated to my progress, both on and off the field. I strongly feel that my passion for learning and soccer will never fade. Playing soccer in college would be a dream come true and I will do whatever it takes to make that dream a reality.
