As a young kid, I remember watching my mom run ultra marathons. I always wanted to be at her runs, crewing, helping out, and running with her. I was hooked. Watching my mom run created a love for the sport that still hasn't waivered—a love for the independence and simplicity of running. The fact that every race is always on me, regardless of the outcome, excited me. Knowing I control my fate drives me to be great, and in track, that control is highlighted. These lessons have carried through to the classroom where I am driven by the responsibility of independence. Therefore, I strive for greatness in all aspects of my life, and it all started with running. I implement this by putting high standards on myself, knowing it will push me to pursue greatness. For example, In the classroom, I only aspire to be my best self and tend not to get tangled up comparing my academic achievements with others. Still, those high standards I put on myself make me the extremely competitive student I am.
During my last track season, I felt my commitment and work ethic in track start to waiver. I could feel all the work I had done in the previous few years slipping away, and then I fractured my pelvis. Even though it was a minor fracture, it gave me time to reflect on my past track season. After two months of reflection and rehab, I was reminded how much running means to me. It gave me a more focused and determined work ethic and I am more motivated than ever. I have begun working my way back and know that the minor setback has and will make me stronger than ever.
