Personal Statement

I LOVE TO COMPETE - at anything.  Throughout my high school career,  I have lettered in 5 different sports;  cross country and shooting team in the fall, basketball in the winter, and tennis and track in the spring.  I would have lettered in golf as well in the spring but at my school there is no way to compete in three sports in the spring and still attend class!  I have been All-Region in Cross Country twice, All-Region in tennis once and helped my team win the State Class A title in tennis my Freshman and Junior Year and we would have won in my Sophomore year as well except that Covid-19 ended the season early.  I helped lead our track team to a runner-up finish in State Class A in May of 2021 helping to set school records in the 4x400 and 4x800.  In all of my sports, I always give everything I have. I leave it all on the field or on the court.  All my coaches will tell you that!  I feel like the upside to competing in five sports is that the moment does not get too big for me. I've been there and done that.  Competition translates the same in any sport!  I also feel like many of the skills I have acquired in one sport have had cross over benefit to my other sports.  I feel like the downside to competing in five sports is that there is still a great deal of untapped potential in track for me.  I have always gotten a late start in track because basketball is still going on into late February.  Then once I get into track I am also playing tennis.   So, I go to track practice, run, run to the tennis courts, change shoes, and play tennis.  Unfortunately, track season my Sophomore year only included one meet before the season was shut down.  This year I started to devote more time to track.  During the course of the season I was able to drop over 2 seconds in my 400 meter time and over 1/2 second in my 200 meter time.  I did not even run the 800 meter the entire season because of other events, but ran the anchor leg for our 4x800 team at the State finals and ran my split in 2:01 almost 10 seconds faster than each of my teammates that had been running it all season.  I feel like I have a great deal of room to improve in both my 400 meter and 800 meter times particularly in college when I am able to devote all of my time and energy to one sport.  Of all the sports, I am most passionate about track.  I love the dichotomy of track - its simpleness and its complexity.  It doesn't get more simple than hearing runners take your mark, set, and POW and you are off with all of your might trying to outrun the guy next to you.  On the other hand, it doesn't get more complex than all the factors that go into outrunning the guy right next to you; the nutrition, sleep, strength training, speed training, technique, strategy, etc.  In addition to competing on the field, I also enjoy competing in the classroom.   I take my academics very seriously and attend a very rigorous college preparatory school, Stratford Academy. I currently have a 4.1 GPA and a 1360 on my SAT.  I continue to strive for excellence and I hope to improve my academic scores and my track times my Senior year.
