Personal Statement
My collegiate goals and aspirations are to positively impact my teammates around me and do whatever I can to help support the team. Whether it's to bring a positive attitude or bring my best performance on race day, I'm willing to do whatever is needed of me. I'm a very hard working individual who is willing to train at whatever level is needed of me and I will lead those around me to better help the team. I am very familiar with having to work under pressure and I know what it takes to lead a team to success when it matters.
My high school running career started off as perfect as I could have asked it to. I came into Carmel as a freshman with high hopes of obtaining a varsity letter by running under 17 minutes in the 5k. I worked for that goal and I made sure to never lose sight of it. I ended up running 16:46 in my last race of the regular season! Being at such a large school like Carmel, I knew that it was a stretch for me to be put in the varsity races as a freshman but achieving my goal brought a lot of satisfaction. I continued to work hard through track where I would run a 10:10 3200 and letter once again! Then tragedy struck as I was having the best summer of my running career. I was slated to be in the varsity as a sophomore and potentially run in the state meet. It was then I figured out I had a femoral stress fracture that kept me out the rest of the season. I began to get very out of shape and it all almost seemed hopeless.
I wasn't going to let that setback define who I was. I worked my tail off to come back as strong as ever and I ended up running 9:52 that next track season. I would go on to break 16 minutes in the 5k and place 33rd in the state meet as a Junior later that same year. I felt like I could do whatever I set my mind to and I was feeling motivated. However, my Junior year track season would be filled with disappointment as I failed to reach my goals and never quite reach the potential I knew I had.
Was it mental? Or was I just not physically fit? Whatever it was, I was determined to not let it happen again. I had a spectacular summer of training going into my senior year and I was ready to make a splash. I would end up running 15:31 and place 15th at the state meet! Now that I'm on course again, I'm looking to have a breakout track season and fulfill the potential I know I have in the 3200 and even in the 1600. I am hoping to find a college with my intended major and a team that I can contribute to in some fashion from day 1. Not necessarily in just the running aspect, but also in spreading my positive attitude and hard work ethic. I hope to build those up around me and strengthen the existing positive team atmosphere in the locker room.
